Orlando Pirates return to Betway Premiership action on Tuesday evening when they face a struggling Siwelele FC outfit at the Free State Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 7:30pm.
The Buccaneers head into the clash full of confidence after a commanding 3-0 CAF Champions League preliminary round first-leg victory over Lesotho’s Lioli FC on Saturday. That result followed another impressive 3-0 league triumph against Chippa United in late August, and coach Abdeslam Ouaddou’s men will now be eager to keep their momentum going in domestic competition.
Siwelele’s Struggles Continue
Siwelele, under the leadership of coach Lehlohonolo Seema, have endured a difficult start to the season. After acquiring the Premiership status of SuperSport United, the club has struggled to find rhythm and currently sits 14th on the log. The situation was further disrupted by the departure of assistant coach Andre Arendse, with former Bloemfontein Celtic defender Willem Jackson now stepping in to provide support from the bench.
Adding to the intrigue, the two sides are set to clash again soon in the Carling Knockout Cup, giving Tuesday’s fixture an extra layer of importance.
Orlando Pirates Finding Their Rhythm
Pirates’ last visit to Bloemfontein ended in a 2-1 defeat against Marumo Gallants earlier this season, but the Soweto giants have since turned things around. Coach Ouaddou credits his team’s improvement to trust and unity within the squad.
“When you’re part of Orlando Pirates and competing in multiple competitions, it’s important to manage players,” said Ouaddou. “You have to give time to everyone. That way, you build trust and keep the squad fresh to compete for trophies.”
The Moroccan tactician has rotated carefully while still maintaining consistency in his line-ups, with new signings also beginning to make their mark. As the transfer window nears its close, Ouaddou insists he is satisfied with the squad’s balance and mentality.
“I am happy with the group I have,” he added. “They have a fantastic mentality and are good human beings. The dressing room is one of the best I’ve worked with, and the players always give their all.”
Big Ambitions for the Buccaneers
With a deep squad and renewed confidence, Pirates enter the encounter as heavy favorites. A victory over Siwelele would not only extend their winning streak but also strengthen their push for a first league title since 2012.
For Siwelele, the challenge is about finding consistency and stability amid a rocky start to the campaign. For Pirates, Tuesday offers an opportunity to send a message of intent to the rest of the Premiership.
