Mamelodi Sundowns are preparing to send defender Kegan Johannes out on loan before the close of the transfer window, with a number of clubs reportedly monitoring his situation.
Struggles Since Arrival at Mamelodi Sundowns
The 24-year-old joined Sundowns from SuperSport United at the start of last season but has found it difficult to cement a regular spot at Chloorkop. His exclusion from the squad that featured in the recent FIFA Club World Cup has raised further questions about his long-term future with the Brazilians.
Limited Chances at Right-Back
Even in the absence of first-choice right-back Khuliso Mudau earlier this season, Johannes failed to earn playing time. Instead, coach Miguel Cardoso has preferred Zuko Mdunyelwa and the versatile Thapelo Morena to occupy the role.
A source close to the club suggested that competition in the position is too strong for Johannes to break through, adding:
“From what I know, he will find game time difficult because the coach believes other players in that position are far ahead of him. The team is open to letting him go on loan so he can get minutes elsewhere. With Khuliso back, competition will only get tougher.”
Clubs Showing Interest
Clubs, including newly rebranded Siwelele FC, are believed to be keen on securing Johannes’ services on loan. The move could provide him with the opportunity to rediscover form and confidence through regular football.
Injuries Hampering Progress
Aside from stiff competition in defence, Johannes’ development has also been hampered by persistent minor injuries. These setbacks have limited his chances to make a strong case for a permanent place in Sundowns’ match-day squads.
With Sundowns chasing silverware on multiple fronts, a loan move appears the most viable option for both the player and the club.
