Many students are currently searching for Gauteng Universities Still Open for 2026 Late Applications. The demand for higher education is rising, and thousands of learners want to secure a place. However, closing dates vary widely between institutions. Some universities have already closed their applications, while others offer late enquiry systems. Understanding the current deadlines is critical to avoid disappointment.

Why Application Deadlines Differ Between Gauteng Universities

Universities in Gauteng manage admissions differently based on programme capacity and demand. For high-demand courses like Medicine or Veterinary Science, deadlines close as early as May or June. Other faculties keep applications open until September or October 2025. Late application or “late enquiry” systems are used to fill remaining spaces in January 2026.

University of Johannesburg (UJ) – Late Enquiry System for 2026

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) provides an official Late Enquiry System. This allows students to check if spaces remain after normal deadlines.

  • Opening date: 20 January 2026 (14:20)
  • Closing date: 26 January 2026 (20:00)

According to UJ:

“Anybody who wants to enquire whether UJ still has space in a particular qualification or wishes to change to another course must use the late application enquiry system.”

Importantly, UJ warns applicants:

“Late enquiries are free and we caution you to not fall victim to such a scam.”

This system is highly relevant for students who missed earlier deadlines.

University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) – Competitive Applications

Wits University is one of the most competitive institutions in Gauteng. While some programmes close in June 2025, others remain open until 30 September 2025. Applicants should monitor the Wits website for official updates: Wits University.

As with UP, Wits does not generally allow late applications. Instead, students must apply early and ensure they meet the strict entry requirements.

Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) – Later Deadlines

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) often accepts applications later in the year compared to UP and Wits. For 2026, several programmes will remain open until September 2025. This gives prospective students more time. However, applicants should confirm with the TUT website to ensure accuracy, as dates vary across faculties.

Private Institutions in Gauteng Offering Late Applications

Besides public universities, several private institutions in Gauteng also accept late applications. Institutions such as Richfield Graduate Institute and Boston City Campus often provide flexible application windows. These can extend well into January 2026. While fees are higher, private institutions provide an alternative for students who miss public university deadlines.

Differences Between Late Application and Late Enquiry

It is important to distinguish between late applications and late enquiries.

  • Late Applications: Direct submissions after the official deadline, if the university allows it.
  • Late Enquiries: Systems, like UJ’s, where students can check for available spaces online.

Not all universities accept late applications. Most, like Wits and UP, expect applications before official deadlines. Only UJ currently confirms a late enquiry window for 2026.

Common Mistakes Students Make with Late Applications

Many students assume they can simply apply late anywhere. This is not true. Common mistakes include:

  • Waiting until the results are released before applying.
  • Ignoring faculty-specific deadlines.
  • Believing in scams that offer paid late application services.

Universities have warned against fake agents. Always apply through official websites.

Expert Advice for 2026 Applicants

Education experts advise applying early, even if unsure of final results. Professor Themba Mosia, Higher Education Ombud, recently noted:

“The challenge we see is students waiting for Grade 12 results before applying. Universities cannot extend space for everyone; deadlines are critical.” (Interview cited in Mail & Guardian, 2024)

This highlights the importance of respecting deadlines and using systems like UJ’s late enquiry if necessary.

Financial Aid and NSFAS Deadlines

Applying late may also impact financial aid eligibility. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) requires students to apply within set deadlines. Missing university deadlines often results in missing NSFAS deadlines as well. For details, visit NSFAS.

Gauteng Universities Still Open for 2026

To summarise:

  • UP: Closed by 30 June 2025, no late applications.
  • Wits: Mostly closes by September 2025, no late applications.
  • TUT: Still open until September 2025 for many programmes.
  • UJ: Offers a late enquiry system in January 2026.

Students should plan ahead and confirm all dates on official university websites. For those who miss deadlines, private institutions remain an option.

Act Now to Secure Your Place

Finding Universities still open for 2026 requires careful planning and quick action. The earlier students apply, the better their chances of securing a place. Gauteng offers world-class universities, but competition is fierce. Late applicants have limited opportunities, with UJ’s late enquiry system being the most notable option.
