A devastating road accident on the N1 North freeway has claimed five lives after a minibus taxi crash overturned between the Buccleuch interchange and Allandale Road on Thursday afternoon.
Fatal Collision and Injuries Reported
According to Gauteng traffic police, the accident occurred at around 12:20pm and resulted in multiple injuries alongside the confirmed fatalities. Emergency services and law enforcement were quickly dispatched to the scene, where rescue operations and medical assistance were underway.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) confirmed that the incident involved a single vehicle – the overturned minibus taxi. Tragically, five people were declared dead at the scene, while several others sustained serious injuries.
Major Traffic Disruptions on the N1
Motorists were warned of heavy delays as the crash caused severe traffic backlogs in both directions of the freeway. The far-right lane was particularly affected, with traffic flow grinding to a near standstill.
“The accident has resulted in multiple injuries and, sadly, five confirmed fatalities. Motorists are strongly advised to avoid this stretch of the freeway and use alternative routes,” JMPD said in a statement.
Authorities also indicated that a full freeway closure would be necessary to allow proper scene processing and recovery of the wreckage.
The Gauteng traffic police cautioned that clearing the scene could take several hours, likely impacting the afternoon peak traffic. Motorists were urged to exercise patience, plan ahead, and drive cautiously.
“Expect heavy delays in both directions on the N1 freeway. We appeal to road users to remain vigilant and patient as recovery operations continue,” the JMPD added.
Minibus Taxi Crash Turns N1 into Tragedy
This tragic minibus taxi crash is another reminder of the dangers on South Africa’s roads, particularly during peak traffic hours. Authorities have called on all motorists to remain cautious, adhere to speed limits, and prioritise road safety to help prevent further loss of life.
