The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has intensified its battle against corruption, fraud, and sexual misconduct within its ranks, as it announces the dismissal of five more officials. This marks a significant step in a year-long crackdown aimed at cleaning up the department, which has seen 38 officials fired in just 12 months. The move is part of Home Affairs’ broader initiative to restore integrity and combat criminal activities within the public service.

Home Affairs Fires 5 More Officials: A Bold Stand Against Corruption

Home Affairs fired five officials on Monday for offences ranging from fraud to sexual assault. This latest action brings the total number of dismissals in 2025 to 38, reflecting the department’s commitment to tackling corruption at all levels. The crackdown follows a series of high-profile incidents, including the dismantling of a passport fraud syndicate in Durban.

“These dismissals are part of an ongoing effort to clean up Home Affairs,” said Duwayne Esau, DHA spokesperson. “The department is now taking swift and decisive action against anyone found guilty of misconduct.”

A Record of Convictions and Prosecutions

Out of the 38 dismissed officials, eight have already been convicted and sentenced to prison for periods ranging from four to 18 years. Additionally, 19 more individuals are under criminal prosecution, with investigations ongoing. These figures highlight the DHA’s aggressive stance on combating fraud and abuse within the department.

Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Leon Schreiber, has stressed that those engaging in fraudulent or abusive activities will no longer be shielded by slow disciplinary processes. “The days of defrauding this department or committing acts of sexual harassment or abuse while relying on long, drawn-out disciplinary processes are over,” Schreiber declared.

The DHA’s Strategy to Clean Up

The department’s swift actions reflect a broader strategy aimed at cleaning up Home Affairs and restoring public trust. As part of this strategy, the DHA has implemented new anti-corruption measures and strengthened collaboration with law enforcement agencies, such as the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and the Hawks.

In addition to the dismissals, the department has taken steps to streamline its internal disciplinary processes, making them more efficient and transparent. The recent arrests of DHA officials involved in a passport fraud syndicate in Durban are a case in point. These arrests underscore the department’s zero-tolerance approach to criminal behaviour.

Strengthening Internal Accountability

The launch of the Border Management and Immigration Anti-Corruption Forum has further reinforced the DHA’s commitment to combating corruption. This forum brings together key stakeholders, including the Border Management Authority, the SIU, and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), to tackle criminal activities both within and outside the department.

Dr. Schreiber expressed his gratitude to the diligent officials who have helped accelerate disciplinary processes and bring corrupt elements to justice. “Committed officials like these are the future of Home Affairs,” Schreiber said. “We will continue working together as #TeamHomeAffairs to clean out the corrupt elements that represent the past.”

Minister Schreiber’s Commitment to Reform

In a statement, Minister Schreiber reaffirmed his commitment to restoring the credibility of the department. “The dismissal of 38 officials in just 12 months is a strong indication that we are serious about eradicating corruption and sexual misconduct from Home Affairs,” he stated. The Minister’s decisive actions highlight the government’s determination to ensure that public servants uphold the highest standards of integrity.

Schreiber’s leadership has been pivotal in driving this anti-corruption initiative, with both public and private sector stakeholders praising his approach.

The Role of Public Cooperation

The success of these efforts also relies on public cooperation. As the DHA continues to tackle criminal syndicates within the department, it encourages members of the public to report any suspicious activities. This partnership between the government and the public is critical in maintaining transparency and integrity in the country’s immigration and border management systems.

A Brighter Future for Home Affairs

With these bold steps, the Department of Home Affairs is sending a clear message to all officials: corruption and misconduct will not be tolerated. The latest dismissals represent just one part of a larger effort to ensure that the department functions with integrity, transparency, and accountability.

As the DHA continues to clean up its ranks, the public can expect a more streamlined and efficient service. The department’s commitment to eradicating corruption, fraud, and sexual assault is set to pave the way for a brighter future for Home Affairs.

The recent dismissal of five more officials demonstrates the Department of Home Affairs’ firm commitment to rooting out corruption, fraud, and sexual misconduct. With 38 officials dismissed in just one year, the DHA is sending a strong message that unethical behaviour will not be tolerated. The collaboration with law enforcement agencies, the implementation of stronger internal controls, and Minister Schreiber’s leadership are key components of the ongoing efforts to clean up the department. As these efforts continue, the public can expect significant improvements in the quality and integrity of services provided by Home Affairs.
