South Africa’s bakkie lovers have just a few weeks to wait before the arrival of Toyota’s latest offering the Hilux Legend 55, a special-edition model that commemorates 55 years of the Hilux nameplate in the country.
A Long-Awaited Arrival
Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has officially confirmed that the Hilux Legend 55 will go on sale from 18 August 2025, slightly later than the initially promised end-of-July timeline. The announcement brings excitement to fans who first caught a glimpse of the bakkie back in January during Toyota’s annual State of the Motoring Industry event.
The Hilux Legend 55 also made a public appearance during the Toyota Cup held at Moses Mabhida Stadium, where Kaizer Chiefs faced off against Asante Kotoko of Ghana offering a tantalising preview of the upcoming model.
The “55” in the model’s name pays tribute to the Hilux’s rich heritage in South Africa, a legacy that spans over five decades.
“The Legend 55 allows us to reflect on the Hilux journey in this country,” said Tasneem Lorgat, General Communications Manager at TSAM. “It’s more than just a bakkie it’s been a dependable partner across generations, evolving with the needs of South Africans.”
A Farewell to the Current Generation
As the current generation Hilux nears the end of its lifecycle, the Legend 55 is expected to be one of the final special editions before a new-generation model is introduced, likely in 2026. In the interim, the Legend 55 serves as both a celebration and a swan song.
One of the standout features of the Legend 55 is its widebody design a trait previously exclusive to the high-performance GR-Sport model.
While Toyota has not officially confirmed the powertrain, it’s expected that the Legend 55 will feature the uprated 2.8-litre GD-6 turbo-diesel engine, similar to the GR-Sport. That engine delivers 165kW and 550Nm, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.
Fuel consumption is rated at 8.7l/100km, offering a driving range of up to 920km on its 80-litre tank. In terms of practicality, the bakkie can tow up to 3,500kg and carry 790kg in the rear load bay.
Premium Styling and Equipment
The Legend 55 will come equipped with exclusive features that elevate its design and capability. Some of these additions include:

Expected Pricing
Toyota has yet to announce the official price for the Hilux Legend 55. However, considering its premium positioning and equipment, pricing is expected to be close to R1 million, in line with the current GR-Sport model.
