Planned City Power Outages in Joburg This Week

City Power has announced scheduled power cuts across multiple areas in Johannesburg. These outages are part of their ongoing maintenance programme, designed to ensure the reliability and efficiency of the electricity supply network. Customers should take note of these planned interruptions, especially since they will affect different parts of the city on different days.

Tuesday, 29 July 2025: Midrand Areas Affected

On Tuesday, 29 July, Midrand will be the first area to experience planned power cuts. Affected areas will include both residential and business zones, with the interruption taking place at Allendale Substation. Power will be cut from 9 am to 5 pm, impacting the following areas:

  • Rabie Ridge Extensions 1, 2, and 3
  • Mayibuye
  • Kanana Extensions 4 and 5
  • Austin View

City Power has assured customers that the outage is necessary to perform crucial maintenance work. Although the interruption is scheduled to last eight hours, the utility warns that the power could be restored earlier than planned, and residents should treat all electrical points as live during this time.

Wednesday, 30 July 2025: Fleurhof and Olivedale

Two major power outages are scheduled for Wednesday, 30 July 2025. Residents in Fleurhof will experience an eight-hour power interruption from 8am to 4pm. This outage, affecting the Fleurhof Substation, is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the maintenance and safety of the area’s electricity infrastructure.

Simultaneously, residents in areas served by the Olivedale Substation will also experience power cuts from 9 am to 5 pm. The following areas will be impacted:

  • Olivedale
  • Johannesburg North
  • Jukskei Park

Both areas will be affected by the power interruption, which is part of the overall maintenance work scheduled for the week. City Power has advised customers to take necessary precautions and prepare for the power cuts.

Thursday, 31 July 2025: Olivedale Substation Continues

The final major power interruption for the week will take place on Thursday, 31 July 2025. Once again, Olivedale Substation will be the focus of the maintenance work, with power being cut from 9 am to 5 pm. Areas affected by this outage include:

  • Johannesburg North
  • Noordhang
  • Jukskei Park

City Power’s maintenance work continues in these areas to ensure the long-term stability of the electricity network. Customers are reminded that the restoration of power may occur earlier than scheduled, and all electrical supply points should be treated with caution during this time.

Why Are These Power Outages Necessary?

City Power explained that the planned outages are essential for ongoing maintenance and upgrades to the city’s electricity network. These regular maintenance sessions are part of the utility’s commitment to providing a reliable, uninterrupted power supply to Johannesburg residents.

A statement from City Power confirmed that the interruptions are necessary to improve service and infrastructure. “The interruption is necessary to do essential maintenance work on our network which is part of our programme of constantly striving to provide a better service,” the utility noted.

Impact of City Power Outages on Johannesburg Residents

While City Power acknowledges that these outages may cause inconvenience to residents, the utility assures that these disruptions are in the best interest of maintaining a robust and sustainable electricity supply. Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to prepare in advance for the planned interruptions and to take appropriate safety measures during the outage period.

The utility also urged residents to remain vigilant as the supply may be restored earlier than expected. “As the supply may be restored at any time, customers are urged to always treat their electricity supply points as live,” City Power warned.

City Power’s planned outages from Tuesday, 29 July to Thursday, 31 July 2025, are part of ongoing maintenance efforts to enhance Johannesburg’s electricity supply. Affected areas include parts of Midrand, Fleurhof, Olivedale, and Johannesburg North. While these outages may cause temporary inconvenience, they are crucial for ensuring the long-term reliability of the city’s electricity network.

Residents in the affected areas should take necessary precautions and remain alert to the possibility of early power restoration. City Power regrets any inconvenience caused and assures that the interruptions are necessary for improving the quality of service to all Johannesburg customers.
