Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has recently escalated his criticisms of Kenny Kunene, the deputy leader of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), by accusing him of lying about his involvement with Katiso “KT” Molefe, a businessman and murder suspect in the high-profile DJ Sumbody case. The dispute has brought to the surface deep political tensions and questions of credibility within South Africa’s political landscape.

In a public address, Malema accused Kunene of fabricating a story about his relationship with Molefe, a claim that Malema describes as a “pure lie.” He further compared Kunene’s actions to the notorious behaviour of the 26 and 28 prison gangs, known for their deceitful tactics. This article explores the fallout from Malema’s remarks, the ongoing investigation into the DJ Sumbody murder, and the implications for Kunene and his political career.

The Alleged Lie and Malema’s Reaction

Malema’s accusation centres around Kunene’s claim that he did not know Molefe, despite being found at his residence when police arrived to arrest him during a raid on July 21, 2025. Kunene denied any personal association with Molefe, stating that his visit was related to his media platform, Africa News Global. However, Malema was quick to dismiss this explanation, calling it a blatant lie.

According to Malema, “We told you these [people] are criminals. They are nothing but mabhantinti [jailbirds]. He says he doesn’t know that guy; he knows that guy. I know that guy, not from a personal point of view, [he’s] a well-known businessman.”

For more on the suspension of Kenny Kunene following his visit to a DJ Sumbody murder suspect’s home, read our article on Gayton McKenzie Suspends Kenny Kunene.

The 26 and 28 Gang Comparison

Malema took his criticism further by comparing Kunene’s actions to the infamous 26 and 28 gangs, prison factions notorious for using manipulation and deceit. “That’s a lie. It’s a pure lie and that’s how thugs 26, 28 [prison] gangs succeed,” Malema stated. This comparison, laden with criminal implications, paints Kunene in a negative light, aligning him with a reputation for dishonesty and criminal ties.

Malema’s analogy wasn’t just an insult but an attempt to underscore what he perceives as a pattern of behaviour among political figures like Kunene, who have been involved in questionable activities.

Kenny Kunene’s Defence: ‘I Didn’t Know Him Personally’

In response to Malema’s harsh remarks, Kunene has maintained that he did not know Molefe on a personal level. He insisted that his presence at Molefe’s home was purely coincidental and related to his work with Africa News Global. Kunene claimed that he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, stressing that his intention was to interview Molefe, not to engage in any criminal activity.

Kunene’s defence, however, has not convinced many critics, particularly opposition leaders who have seized the opportunity to call for his resignation from his role as Johannesburg’s MMC for Transport.

The Political Fallout: PA Suspends Kunene

In the aftermath of the incident, the Patriotic Alliance (PA) took swift action by suspending Kunene for a month to allow time for an internal investigation. Despite the suspension, Gayton McKenzie, the leader of the PA, publicly defended Kunene, stating that he trusted his deputy and believed the allegations were unfounded.

McKenzie’s stance is noteworthy, as it highlights the PA’s internal support for Kunene, despite the growing public outcry. The party’s decision to suspend him temporarily reflects the gravity of the situation and the need for due diligence in handling such sensitive matters.

DJ Sumbody’s Murder Case: A Major Breakthrough

The arrest of Molefe has been described by the police as a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into the 2022 murder of DJ Sumbody, a popular South African musician. This case, which has haunted South Africa’s entertainment industry for nearly three years, has now been thrust back into the spotlight due to Kunene’s alleged involvement with Molefe.

Police believe that Molefe played a central role in orchestrating the murder, and his arrest has brought new attention to the case. The timing of Kunene’s visit to Molefe’s home has raised eyebrows, especially given the accusations of ties to a murder suspect.

Opposition Parties Demand Kunene’s Resignation

The allegations against Kunene have sparked fierce criticism from opposition parties, particularly the Democratic Alliance (DA). Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, a DA member, called Kunene’s explanation of events “laughable” and demanded that he resign immediately.

Kayser-Echeozonjoku’s comments reflect the growing dissatisfaction with Kunene’s credibility, particularly among political opponents who see his actions as undermining the integrity of local government.

Gayton McKenzie Defends Kunene

Despite the backlash, Gayton McKenzie remains a staunch defender of Kunene. McKenzie has repeatedly stated that he believes Kunene’s version of events, dismissing the accusations as politically motivated. His unwavering support for Kunene highlights the internal divide within the PA and the broader political implications of the scandal.

Kunene’s Political Future at Risk

The fallout from the Malema-Kunene clash has put Kunene’s political future in jeopardy. If the internal investigation within the PA finds any evidence linking Kunene to Molefe or criminal activity, it could spell the end of his career in politics. Additionally, continued public scrutiny may force Kunene to reconsider his position within the PA.

A Political Storm

Julius Malema’s accusations against Kenny Kunene have unleashed a political storm that has sent ripples through the South African political landscape. As the investigation into Molefe’s role in the DJ Sumbody murder continues, the public is left questioning Kunene’s integrity and political standing. Whether or not Kunene can overcome the controversy surrounding him will depend on the findings of the PA’s internal investigation and how he manages the mounting political pressure.
