Stellenbosch FC’s standout wing-back Fawaaz Basadien is on the brink of completing a high-profile move to reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns, with a medical scheduled for Friday morning at Chloorkop.
Reliable sources have confirmed that Basadien, a long-term target for Sundowns, is expected to finalise his switch to the Pretoria giants over the weekend. The 28-year-old Bafana Bafana international did not take part in training with Stellies on Thursday during their pre-season camp in Gauteng, instead observing from the sidelines—a clear signal that a transfer was nearing conclusion.
Another Stellies Star Heads to Chloorkop
Basadien will become the latest in a growing list of top performers from Stellenbosch FC to make the move to Mamelodi Sundowns. He follows in the footsteps of Iqraam Rayners, last season’s Player of the Year at Stellies, who made the same journey ahead of the previous campaign.
The Men in Maroon, who have finished third in the Betway Premiership for two consecutive seasons, continue to be a wellspring of talent for Sundowns. Past transfers include Argentine midfielder Junior Mendieta and Jayden Adams. Mendieta has since moved on to Saudi Arabian side Al-Faisaly FC.
Contract & Transfer Background
Basadien originally joined Stellenbosch in 2022 from Moroka Swallows and signed an extended deal in early 2023 that would have kept him at the club until June 2026. That long-term contract made him a difficult target for other South African giants like Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, with Sundowns reportedly the only domestic club able to meet the buyout clause.
Despite ongoing transfer speculation, Basadien has remained professional and committed to the club. In previous interviews, he emphasised his loyalty:
“For me, it was to remain grounded and know that my contract is here at Stellenbosch. I’m playing for Stellenbosch and just focusing on what I can control. That was the main thing.”
However, with the medical now lined up and all parties seemingly in agreement, it appears Basadien is finally ready to embark on a new chapter with Bafana Ba Style.
If all goes according to plan during Friday’s medical at Chloorkop, Basadien is expected to sign his contract with Mamelodi Sundowns over the weekend, adding further depth and experience to an already formidable squad ahead of their upcoming domestic and continental campaigns.
