SA Passport Rises in Global Rankings, with an upward shift of three positions in the latest Henley Passport Index for 2025. This rise offers South African travellers new opportunities and highlights the country’s growing international influence. For those looking to explore the world, this development could simplify travel in some regions. But what does this mean in practical terms for South African passport holders? Let’s dive into the key insights and how this could affect your future travels.

SA Passport Rises in Global Rankings

According to the latest Henley Passport Index, South Africa’s passport has moved up three spots from 51st place in 2024 to 48th in 2025. This shift signifies a modest but important improvement. South African passport holders now enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 103 destinations globally. While this is a step forward, the South African passport still ranks behind top global passports such as those from Japan, Singapore, and Germany, which offer access to significantly more destinations.

Learn how Home Affairs’ new International Service Centres are streamlining passport applications and reducing wait times to just five weeks.

What is the Henley Passport Index?

The Henley Passport Index is an authoritative ranking system that assesses the strength of passports worldwide based on their holders’ ability to travel visa-free. Using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the index considers 199 passports and 227 destinations. As the original and most comprehensive passport ranking system, it offers valuable insights into global travel accessibility and passport strength.

The SA Passport in the African Context

In Africa, South Africa ranks third in passport strength, behind Mauritius and Seychelles. This regional standing highlights South Africa’s significance in the continent and underscores its relatively strong diplomatic ties. South African citizens can travel to several Southern African countries visa-free, including Namibia, Botswana, and Zambia, making regional travel much easier.

Amanda Smit, Head of South, East, and Central Africa at Henley & Partners, states, “The South African passport’s rise reflects strengthening diplomatic ties and growing international influence. South Africa’s standing in Africa continues to solidify, while the potential for even more access to other regions remains strong.”

What Does This Mean for South African Travellers?

For South African travellers, this rise in the Henley Passport Index signifies more opportunities for global travel. With 103 visa-free destinations, South Africans now have greater access to regions in the Americas, parts of Asia, and much of Southern Africa. However, the passport still faces restrictions, particularly when travelling to Europe, the UK, and parts of Asia.

Dr. Peter T. Brierley, a travel and migration policy expert, adds, “While this rise is a positive sign of increased mobility, South African travellers should be mindful of visa requirements, especially for popular destinations in Europe and the United Kingdom.”

SA Passport vs. Top Global Passports

While South Africa’s passport has improved its ranking, it still falls behind top passports like those from Japan, Singapore, and Germany. For instance, Japan offers access to 193 destinations visa-free, a considerable advantage over South Africa’s 103. These top-ranking countries’ passports are highly prized, reflecting strong diplomatic relations and international mobility.

The Challenges for South African Travellers

Despite the rise, South African travellers continue to face challenges. Visa application rejections, particularly for Schengen Area countries, remain high, and South Africans seeking to travel to the UK also encounter stringent visa requirements. For South African travellers, understanding these challenges and applying for visas well in advance is essential to avoid disruptions in travel plans.

The Future Outlook for South African Travel

Looking ahead, South Africa’s improving passport strength signals positive diplomatic developments. Continued efforts to strengthen international relations and secure more visa-free travel agreements could further enhance the South African passport’s global standing. As South Africa continues to build its international presence, more travel opportunities could arise in the future.

The rise in South Africa’s passport ranking reflects its growing global influence and offers its citizens improved travel options. While South African travellers still face hurdles in some regions, this increase in passport strength provides a glimpse into the country’s expanding diplomatic reach. To maximise these new opportunities, South Africans should remain proactive in staying informed about visa requirements and continue to advocate for greater international mobility.

Find out how the Department of Home Affairs is expanding travel options with the launch of two new visas in South Africa.
