Two of Africa’s most decorated women’s football giants are set to lock horns on Tuesday evening in a blockbuster WAFCON 2025 semi-final clash, as South Africa’s Banyana Banyana take on the Super Falcons of Nigeria at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca. Kick-off is at 6pm (CAT), with far more than just a place in the final at stake.

This high-stakes encounter will determine not only who advances to the tournament’s final but also who secures direct qualification to the 2026 FIFA Women’s World Cup. It’s a scenario that injects added intensity into a long-standing and heated continental rivalry.

A Rivalry Forged in Fire

Banyana Banyana enter this match with reasons to be cautiously optimistic. Over their last five encounters with Nigeria, South Africa have notched two wins, including a memorable 2-1 victory in the group stage of the 2022 WAFCON, a tournament they ultimately won, securing their first-ever title. Nigeria have managed one win during that span, while the other two clashes ended in stalemates.

Despite past triumphs, Banyana coach Desiree Ellis is not banking on history to carry her side through.

“I don’t think it means a lot,” Ellis remarked of their 2022 win. “It does show we can win, but this is a different tournament, three years later, with new players and new dynamics. We’ll have to be at our absolute best.”

Grit vs Glamour: Roads to the Semi-Final

South Africa’s journey to the last four was anything but smooth. After navigating the group stage, Ellis’ side faced a stern test in the quarter-finals against Senegal. The tightly-contested affair ended goalless after extra time, with Banyana edging the West Africans on penalties. It wasn’t a vintage performance, but the grit, discipline, and mental resilience shown were hallmarks of a team that knows how to survive under pressure.

On the other hand, Nigeria flexed their muscles with a commanding 5-0 demolition of Zambia in their quarter-final. Esther Okoronkwo shone with a goal and two assists, while attacking stars like Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade looked sharp and clinical. Coach Randy Waldrum’s side appears to be hitting form at the perfect moment, clearly determined to reclaim the title they relinquished in 2022.

Tactical Battle on the Cards

Tuesday’s clash is not just about passion and history, it’s about tactical nous and game management.

Banyana Banyana will likely adopt a disciplined, structured shape, aiming to frustrate Nigeria’s dangerous attack. Their backline, marshaled by the ever-reliable Bambanani Mbane, has been rock-solid throughout the tournament. In midfield, the experienced Refiloe Jane and dynamic Amogelang Motau will be pivotal in setting the tempo and disrupting Nigeria’s rhythm.

Going forward, the pace of Hildah Magaia and the creativity of Jermaine Seoposenwe could be key weapons in hitting Nigeria on the counter.

Familiar Foes, New Stakes

This isn’t the first time these two powerhouses meet in the latter stages of WAFCON. They famously faced off in the 2018 final, which ended in a penalty shootout heartbreak for South Africa as Nigeria lifted the title once again.

However, much has changed since then. South Africa are no longer underdogs, they are champions with experience, tactical depth, and belief. Nigeria remain the most successful team in African women’s football, but they are no longer unbeatable.

A Night for the Ages

With a place in the final and a golden ticket to the 2026 FIFA Women’s World Cup on the line, everything is set for an unforgettable evening in Casablanca.

Will Banyana’s resilience and structure see them through, or will the Super Falcons’ firepower prove too much to contain? One thing is certain, this clash will add another unforgettable chapter to Africa’s greatest women’s football rivalry.
