A total of 45 individuals were arrested for drunk driving in Pretoria this past weekend as Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) intensified its road safety operations across several regions of the capital. The clampdown formed part of targeted weekend enforcement campaigns by various regional TMPD units.
In Mamelodi (Region 6), five drivers were taken into custody for driving under the influence, while officers issued 21 traffic infringement notices. In Pretoria East (Region 6 Sector 2), officers arrested five drivers for being over the legal alcohol limit and detained another person for public drinking.
Region 3: Pretoria West
Over in Pretoria West (Region 3 Sector 1), law enforcement officers arrested eight motorists for drunk driving and handed out 38 infringement fines for other violations.
The Winternest area (Region 1 Sector 2) saw the highest number of drunk driving arrests with ten motorists apprehended. One individual was also arrested for public drinking.
Mabopane and Bronkhorstspruit Arrests
In Mabopane, regional TMPD units arrested seven more motorists for driving under the influence. Bronkhorstspruit (Region 7) also recorded significant numbers, with nine drunk drivers arrested and ten AARTO fines issued.
In a separate operation in Centurion (Region 4), TMPD members apprehended five undocumented foreign nationals and arrested one individual for drunk driving. The operation also led to the issuing of 408 fines for a variety of traffic and bylaw infractions.
TMPD Urges Responsible Driving
TMPD officials have urged motorists to be responsible and avoid drinking and driving, especially with law enforcement ramping up patrols and sobriety checks across Tshwane. The department emphasized that such operations are part of ongoing efforts to reduce road fatalities and ensure public safety.
