Anti-Gang Unit Officers Attacked With Rocks and Bottles in Westbury During Arrest Operation as SAPS Vows to Continue Crime Crackdown
Tensions Boil Over in Westbury: Police Slam Community for Anti-Gang Unit Ambush
The SAPS has issued a strong rebuke following a violent altercation between residents of Westbury and members of the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) during a routine drug arrest on Tuesday, 3 June 2025.
The confrontation unfolded on Steytler Street, a known hotspot for gang-related activity, when officers arrested a suspect for alleged possession of drugs. What began as a standard police operation rapidly descended into chaos as community members reportedly turned hostile.
“Community members started mobilising themselves and throwing police officers with rocks and bottles,” said SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
The AGU officers were forced to tactically withdraw, prioritising community safety even as they faced physical threats. A warning shot was discharged during the retreat, but fortunately, no officers or SAPS vehicles were harmed.
Community Tension Amid Gang Turmoil
Westbury has long struggled with gang violence and drug trafficking. In response to persistent community outcries, the AGU has maintained a presence in several Gauteng crime hotspots including Westbury, Eldorado Park, Moffatview, South Hills, Mohlakeng, Toekomsrus, and Sophiatown.
But the very community pleading for intervention appeared to resist the enforcement effort. This contradiction was not lost on National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, who expressed deep disappointment in the attack.
“The community of Westbury has been consistently complaining about drug-related crime. When we respond with targeted intervention, our officers are met with violence. This is unacceptable,” said Masemola.

A Child Caught in the Crossfire
Tragically, the attack on police came just hours after a child was fatally shot on Crema Street, allegedly by gang members. The incident, occurring around 9 a.m., has further stoked tensions in the already embattled neighbourhood.
This loss underscores the urgency of the AGU’s deployment. These units are specially trained to dismantle gang networks and tackle serious crimes like drug trafficking, gang shootings, and murders.
Police Stand Firm: Law Enforcement Will Not Be Intimidated
Despite the hostility, SAPS leadership has vowed that intimidation and aggression will not deter the AGU from its mission. The unit will continue operations “without fear or favour,” ensuring gang violence is met with firm and lawful resistance.
“We need communities to support, not sabotage, our efforts,” Masemola added. “Lawlessness will not be tolerated.”
Brigadier Mathe reaffirmed the police’s commitment to public safety and commended AGU members for their restraint and discipline under duress.
A Call for Cooperation
SAPS is urging residents of Westbury and other high-crime areas to work with law enforcement, report criminal activities, and avoid shielding criminal elements. The AGU’s work is intended to protect communities, not provoke them.
The police are also appealing for calm and collaboration, especially in light of the recent child shooting, which highlights the devastating human toll of gang activity.
