Urgent maintenance at the Eikenhof pump station causes widespread water disruptions in Randburg as Rand Water and Johannesburg Water work tirelessly to restore services.
Randburg Water Outage: Residents and businesses in Randburg are facing severe water supply disruptions due to an emergency shutdown of a major Rand Water pipeline. The outage stems from a critical pipe burst near Soweto that has necessitated the closure of water supply lines from the Eikenhof pump station—one of the region’s primary water distribution points.
What Caused the Outage?
According to Sipho Mosai, Group Chief Executive of Rand Water, a high-pressure pipeline burst on Monday led to an urgent repair operation. Engineers are currently trying to isolate the damaged section by closing 13 valves—an operation made extremely difficult by the intense water pressure within the system.
“We’ve been trying since yesterday to close all 13 valves feeding into the burst pipe,” Mosai explained. “It’s a tough job because of the high pressure in the line, but reducing that pressure is the only way we can get the repairs done safely and correctly.”
The decision to shut down supply from the Eikenhof pump station was made in the interest of public safety and to facilitate urgent maintenance.
WATCH:
Areas Affected by the Water Shortage
Multiple suburbs across Randburg are currently experiencing low to no water pressure. Affected areas include:
- Ferndale
 - Linden
 - Blairgowrie
 - Northcliff
 - Randpark Ridge
 - Bromhof

Both residential households and local businesses are grappling with the disruption, prompting increased pressure on alternative water sources.
Emergency Response and Support
Johannesburg Water, in collaboration with Rand Water, has been deployed to provide alternative water solutions. Mobile water tankers and temporary supply stations are being coordinated to assist the most affected communities.
“Contractors and technicians are working long hours to fix the problem,” Mosai assured. “We ask everyone to please be patient and understanding. We’re doing everything we can to restore your water supply soon.”
Updates are being shared across various platforms, including social media and local news, to keep residents informed about progress and restoration timelines.
Ongoing Challenges
One of the major complications in resolving the issue is managing the pressure levels in the affected pipeline. Without effectively reducing the pressure from the Eikenhof pump station, technicians are unable to access the damaged section safely.
As repairs continue, there may be intermittent supply interruptions in other Johannesburg areas due to system rebalancing.
What Residents Can Do Now
Randburg residents are urged to:
- Conserve water where possible
 - Stay updated via the official Johannesburg Water and Rand Water social media pages
 - Prepare for extended outages
 - Report any local pipe bursts or leaks to help prevent further strain on the system

A Plea for Patience and Preparedness
With technicians working around the clock and communication lines open, both Johannesburg Water and Rand Water are committed to restoring full service as soon and as safely as possible. While the current water outage is undoubtedly inconvenient, safety and long-term system stability remain top priorities.
Further updates will be released as developments unfold. Residents are encouraged to follow official announcements and avoid relying on unofficial channels or speculation.
