Home Affairs Investigates Timothy Omotoso’s Wife

In light of serious allegations about her immigration status, the South African Department of Home Affairs recently focused its attention on Timothy Omotoso’s wife, Taiwo Omotoso. This investigation follows the deportation of controversial televangelist Timothy Omotoso. He was declared a prohibited individual for using fraudulent documents and overstaying his South African visa.

Background: Timothy Omotoso’s Deportation and Legal Troubles

Timothy Omotoso was once a popular Nigerian televangelist in South Africa with a large fan base. He has since been involved in a number of legal battles involving allegations of human trafficking and sexual abuse. Omotoso, despite multiple charges, was acquitted of one case. However, the National Prosecuting Authority has appealed this acquittal.

The Department of Home Affairs expelled Omotoso on 18 May 2025. He was barred from entering South Africa for five years. Deportation was a result of investigations that revealed Omotoso’s illegal stay in South Africa. Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza confirmed that Omotoso “was still a prohibited person at the time he left”.

Home Affairs investigates Timothy Omotoso’s wife: The allegations

After Omotoso was deported, the Department of Home Affairs focused on his wife, Taiwo Omotoso. Initial investigations indicate that she could also be living in South Africa illegally. According to reports, Taiwo could have used fraudulent documents to obtain residency status or a visa status. This raises serious concerns regarding her legal standing.

Steven van Neel is the head of Immigration Enforcement at Home Affairs. He was quoted as saying: “We are still investigating her and will follow up on all necessary procedures from our end.” Early indications suggest that she is not legally in the country.

Officials from Home Affairs have advised Taiwo that he should leave South Africa voluntarily to avoid arrest and possible legal consequences. These could include prosecution or further restrictions for future travel.

The Legal and Social Implications

The investigation into Timothy Omotoso’s wife demonstrates the South African government’s efforts to enforce immigration law strictly, especially in high-profile instances. The Department of Home Affairs is increasingly taking a strong stance against those who do not adhere to visa conditions and stay in the country illegally.

Mthunzi Mhaga (a legal expert and spokesperson for the NPA) stressed the importance of these investigations. “The South African justice system does not require an accused person to be present during an appeal procedure.” We will continue to pursue justice regardless of the physical location of an individual”.

The case has sparked a public debate on immigration policies and foreign nationals living in South Africa. This is especially true for those who are involved in high-profile or controversial cases.

What does this mean for immigration enforcement in South Africa

The investigation of Taiwo Omotoso shows that the South African authorities intend to apply the law equally regardless of an individual’s status or connection. This sends out a clear message to illegal foreigners in the country.

The Department of Home Affairs in South Africa continues to closely review the status of visas and residency, using this case for future enforcement measures. Focus is not just on compliance, but also on protecting the integrity of South Africa’s immigration system.

As Home Affairs investigates the alleged illegal residency of Timothy Omotoso’s wife, it marks a significant change in the larger narrative surrounding the Omotoso Family. Taiwo Omotoso could face legal consequences similar to those of her husband as the authorities intensify scrutiny.
