Early Payment Dates for May 2025 SRD Grant: Beneficiaries to Receive Funds Sooner

Great news for SRD grant beneficiaries! The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has confirmed early payment dates for the May 2025 R370 SRD grant. Due to the 25th of May falling on a Sunday, Sassa will begin disbursing funds earlier than usual, providing some much-needed relief for millions of South Africans.

Why the Early Payment?

Sassa typically processes the R370 SRD grant at the end of each month, starting from the 25th. However, since the 25th of May 2025 is a Sunday, the agency has made the considerate decision to initiate payments earlier. According to Sassa spokesperson Andile Tshona, the SRD grant payments will be processed from 23 to 28 May.

This shift ensures that beneficiaries do not experience unnecessary delays in receiving their financial assistance, especially given the challenges faced by many vulnerable South Africans.

Check Your Payment Status

While payments will be processed within the mentioned period, recipients should remember that it may take two to three working days for the funds to reflect in their bank accounts. Sassa advises beneficiaries to check their grant status regularly via the SRD website to confirm the exact date of payment.

Eligibility for the SRD Grant

Sassa continues to assist around 9.2 million eligible South Africans, refugees, and asylum seekers through the R370 SRD grant, now in its fifth cycle since its inception during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020. To qualify for this grant, individuals must meet the following criteria:

Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or special permit holder.
Not receive other government support such as UIF benefits, NSFAS bursaries, or other social grants.
Be between the ages of 18 and 60.
Earn no more than R624 per month.

Biometric Verification for New Applicants

Sassa has implemented a biometric verification system to prevent fraud and improve security. All new applicants must undergo biometric verification before grant approval. Existing beneficiaries do not need to repeat this process unless they encounter issues with their application.

Payment Collection Options

Sassa has made it easier for beneficiaries to access their funds through several collection methods:

Bank Account: Have your grant deposited directly for quick access.
Cash Send: For those without bank accounts, this method requires a registered cellphone number and valid ID.
Retail Stores: Recipients can collect their grants from popular retailers like Pick n Pay, Checkers, Shoprite, and Boxer.
