Rea Vaya Smart Card Deadline: Switch to New Orange Card Before Account-Based Ticketing Kicks In
SHARE

Don’t miss the deadline to switch to the new orange Rea Vaya card as the Account-Based Ticketing (ABT) system rolls out on 1 July. Ensure smooth travel by updating your card before 1 June.

Rea Vaya commuters, the deadline to switch to the new orange smart card is fast approaching. Starting 1 June 2025, Rea Vaya users will no longer be able to load funds onto the existing blue smart card, with the new system set to launch fully by 1 July. This is part of a huge upgrade to the fare collection system, moving toward a cashless and more efficient travel experience in Johannesburg.

Why Is the Rea Vaya Card Changing?

The switch to the new orange card is part of a major overhaul of the Rea Vaya system. The introduction of the Account-Based Ticketing (ABT) system will replace the old automated fare collection system. This is not only designed to streamline payments but also to reduce cash handling and improve overall service efficiency. The move towards ABT aims to modernize the public transport experience and align with global best practices in cashless fare management.

Notable Deadlines: Don’t Miss the Change

  • 1 June 2025: The blue smart card will no longer be able to accept funds.
  • 1 July 2025: The new orange ABT card will be mandatory for all Rea Vaya commuters.

From 1 June, commuters will need to ensure they have switched to the new orange card, as they will no longer be able to load funds onto their old blue card. No refunds will be issued for funds left on the old card, so it is advised that users use up any remaining balance before the deadline.

New Orange Card Details

The new orange ABT card costs R50 and will be required to use the newly upgraded payment processors located at all Rea Vaya stations and buses. The cards are designed to be user-friendly, ensuring easy access to the fare system through modern payment technology. The cards are available at all Rea Vaya stations, and commuters are urged to get their cards early to avoid last-minute stress.

What Happens if You Don’t Switch?

Failing to comply with the new card system could result in penalties. Rea Vaya commuters who do not use the new validators properly will face a fare penalty charge of R30. This fine applies in two situations:

  • Tapping in at the start of the journey but failing to tap out at the end.
  • Not tapping out of the system within two hours of entering the bus.

These penalties are part of the effort to ensure smooth and efficient travel, as the system is designed to minimize delays and maintain accurate travel data.

The Bigger Picture: Rea Vaya’s Investment in the Future

The transition to Account-Based Ticketing is just one part of a larger multi-million-rand investment to improve public transport in Johannesburg. The city has allocated R300 million over two years to implement the ABT project, alongside R170 million to complete Phase 1C of the Rea Vaya programme. Despite past delays due to management and operational issues, the city is committed to ensuring the system runs smoothly moving forward.

Rea Vaya’s Phase 1C is now on the verge of completion, with new routes and upgraded services ready to launch. The Johannesburg Development Agency has played a crucial role in overcoming infrastructure challenges, while training efforts for operators and drivers continue to ensure the new systems are operated safely and efficiently.

How Can You Get Your New Orange Card?

Commuters can easily obtain their new orange cards at any of the designated Rea Vaya stations throughout Johannesburg. The R50 cost is a one-time fee for the new card, which will be valid across all Rea Vaya routes. You’ll also find payment validators installed on the buses and at stations for quick and efficient tap-ins and tap-outs.

It’s time to say goodbye to your old blue card, and embrace the future of public transport in Johannesburg. Be sure to make the switch before the 1 June deadline and ensure seamless travel with the new Rea Vaya system.
