Missing South African Journalist’s Decomposed Body Found in KwaMhlanga

The decomposed body found of Sibusiso Ndlovu and his partner Zodwa Mdhluli were discovered by police in KwaMhlanga on May 8, 2025. The couple had been missing since February 18th, 2025. The bodies were found in a remote location in an advanced decomposition state. Initial forensic assessment confirmed their identities. However, DNA testing is still being done to confirm the findings.

Their families, their colleagues and the South African population were shocked by their discovery. Details surrounding their deaths are unclear, but judging by the state of decomposition, they were dead for some time. The tragic conclusion to the search for a decomposed South African journalist has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of journalists in the country.

Who is responsible for the arrests and investigations?

Five suspects were arrested after a thorough police investigation was launched following the discovery of the dead bodies. Three of the five suspects were already in court, and one led police to where the bodies had been found. While the motive for the murders remains unclear, it is clear that foul play was involved.

The tragic deaths of Ndlovu & Mdhluli are a stark reminder of the increasing risks that journalists face in South Africa. Even though they are constitutionally protected, South African journalists have been subjected to threats, violence and intimidation for years, especially those who cover sensitive topics such as corruption, politics and crime.

Media Reactions: A Nationwide Shock

The South African media has been deeply affected by the murders of Sibusiso Mdhluli and Zodwa Ndlovu. Ndlovu was well-known for his love of public service journalism. He founded Capital Live FM, a radio station in Pretoria. Both his death and that of Mdhluli have sparked a strong reaction from journalists and media outlets across the country.

Both the African Media and Communicators Forum and the National Press Club have expressed their sadness and sent condolences to the families of the victims. AMCF Chairperson Elijah Mhlanga said, “Our sincere condolences are sent to the families of the victims.” Both organisations have pledged to support the families and will be in court as the case progresses.

Government response: A call for justice and protection

South Africa’s government condemned the brutal killings of Ndlovu and Mdhluli. Kenny Morolong called the murders a “senseless, brutal act of violent crime,” and extended his condolences to the families. Morolong offered his support to Ndlovu’s family and announced plans for Capital Live FM to honor Ndlovu’s legacy.

Morolong also pledged that the government would take the necessary steps to avoid similar tragedies in the future. This tragedy has brought to light the vulnerability of South African journalists, and the government pledged to work with law enforcement agencies to ensure their security.

The Safety of Journalists is a Growing Concern in South Africa

The deaths of Sibusiso Mdlovu and Zodwa Mdhluli have brought to light growing concerns about the safety of South African journalists. The Constitution guarantees journalists the right to freedom, but they still face serious threats. Reporters of sensitive issues are increasingly subjected to intimidation, violence, and murder.

South African journalists often play a leading role in exposing corruption and injustice. However, this role is not without its costs. The tragic deaths of Ndlovu & Mdhluli highlight the need for better protection for media professionals and an effective response to violence towards the press.

Honoring their Legacy: The Impact of their work

Sibusiso Mdhluli and Zodwa Ndlovu’s legacy will continue to live even though their lives tragically ended. Ndlovu’s work at Capital Live FM, where he was well-known for his dedication to public service journalism, left a lasting impression on the media landscape. His commitment to the truth and to serving his community has inspired many South African journalists.

The media community is hopeful that justice will prevail as the investigation proceeds. The case has brought much-needed awareness to the safety hazards that South African journalists face.

A Call for Justice and Change

The nation was shocked by the discovery of the bodies of Sibusiso Ndlovu, Zodwa Mdhluli. The tragic deaths of these journalists highlight the increasing risks that South African journalists face. An investigation is ongoing into their murders. While we wait for justice to be served, this case serves as an important reminder that journalists must be protected and ensured safety.

Media, government and public all need to work together in order to create a safe environment for South African journalists. It is important that the perpetrators of these crimes be held accountable and that measures are taken to avoid future tragedies.
