Free State residents brace for potential flooding as Vaal Dam water levels surge beyond capacity.
DENEYSVILLE, FREE STATE – In the wake of unrelenting rainfall that has pushed the Vaal Dam beyond its capacity, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has opened a fifth sluice gate, sparking urgent evacuation efforts in Deneysville and other low-lying communities along the Vaal River.
As of Saturday, 6 April 2025, scenes of anxious residents gathering essential items, moving livestock, and preparing to flee their homes have become common in this riverside town. The evacuation order comes as authorities anticipate serious flooding that could threaten lives and property.
“The safety of a boat is important, and the poor residents here have all had to evacuate,” one concerned resident told EWN. “I’ve cleared out my holiday home and am now trying to save what I can before conditions get worse.”
What Triggered the Evacuation?
Heavy and sustained rainfall across the region has caused Vaal Dam water levels to surge, forcing the DWS to release excess water to relieve structural pressure and avoid dam overflow. The decision to open a fifth sluice gate is considered a preventative measure, but it significantly increases the risk of downstream flooding—especially in Deneysville and adjacent settlements.

Authorities on High Alert
The Sedibeng District Municipality has activated its disaster management teams, placing them on high alert as they monitor water flow and support affected residents. The municipality has issued warnings that the situation could deteriorate rapidly with any additional rainfall.
“We are monitoring the situation closely,” officials said. “While the weather has improved slightly, the ground is already saturated, and rivers are running high. We urge all residents in at-risk areas to evacuate promptly and avoid unnecessary travel.”
Community Response: Evacuations and Preparations
Deneysville locals, though visibly distressed, are responding with determination. Many are removing furniture, documents, pets, and even boats from properties along the riverbanks. Several families have already moved to higher ground or are staying with relatives in safer parts of the Free State.
Despite the temporary calm in weather, the sense of urgency remains high. Roads near the river are being monitored for possible closures, and local churches and community centres are being prepared to host evacuees if needed.

What’s Next?
The DWS is expected to continue monitoring dam levels and may adjust sluice gate operations based on rainfall forecasts. For now, the message from authorities is clear: be cautious, evacuate early, and stay informed.
Residents are encouraged to:
- Avoid flood-prone areas
- Monitor local news and official DWS updates
- Prepare emergency kits with medication, food, and documents
- Assist elderly or vulnerable neighbours in evacuating
