Residents Urged to Prepare for Temporary Water Interruptions Due to Essential Infrastructure Upgrades
Affected Areas and Duration
Rand Water has announced urgent maintenance at the Zuikerbosch Treatment Plant, scheduled for Thursday, April 3, 2025. This operation will impact the Palmiet Pumping Station, which will function at 89% capacity for approximately eight and a half hours. As a result, residents in over 100 Johannesburg suburbs may experience reduced water pressure or temporary outages during this period.
The maintenance will affect the water supply to the following Johannesburg Water systems:
- Midrand System: All reservoirs and towers
- Sandton Systems: All reservoirs and towers
- South Hills Tower
- Alexander Park Reservoir: All reservoirs and towers
For a comprehensive list of the affected suburbs and reservoirs, residents are encouraged to visit Johannesburg Water’s official website.
Second Maintenance Scheduled for April 9
In addition to the April 3 maintenance, a second operation is planned for Wednesday, April 9. Eskom will conduct its triennial maintenance at the Daleside Substation, which supplies power to Rand Water’s Daleside Pumping Station. This station services Johannesburg Water’s Deep South systems, including the Ennerdale, Orange Farm, and Lawley Reservoirs. During this maintenance, there will be no pumping at Daleside for eight hours, potentially leading to poor pressure or no water supply in the affected areas.
Preparation and Water Conservation Tips
Residents are advised to take the following steps to mitigate the impact of the scheduled maintenance:
- Store Sufficient Water: Ensure an adequate supply of water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene purposes ahead of the maintenance dates.
- Utilize Alternative Water Sources: Consider rainwater harvesting for non-potable uses, such as flushing toilets and watering plants.
- Limit Non-Essential Water Use: Postpone activities that require significant water consumption, like washing cars or filling swimming pools, during the maintenance periods.
Johannesburg Water is committed to minimizing inconvenience and will deploy water tankers to critical areas, including hospitals, clinics, schools, municipal offices, police stations, and shopping centres, to provide alternative water supplies as needed.
