These outages, scheduled from 8 AM to 4 PM, are necessary for the repair and upgrade of critical power infrastructure. While these planned Johannesburg power outages may cause some temporary inconvenience, they are crucial for ensuring a stable, reliable power supply for the city in the long term.

Why Are These Power Outages Necessary?

City Power regularly carries out maintenance on the electricity infrastructure to ensure reliable service delivery, particularly given the high demand for electricity in Johannesburg. The maintenance efforts are part of a broader strategy to improve power distribution, manage load more effectively, and prevent unexpected outages.

Scheduled outages are designed to reduce the impact on residents and businesses, as they allow for planned downtime when critical maintenance tasks, such as upgrading transformers, replacing power lines, and servicing substations, can be carried out.

While the inconvenience is acknowledged, these disruptions are essential for the long-term health of Johannesburg’s power grid and for avoiding the unplanned, longer-term outages that can occur without regular upkeep.

Overview of the 8-Hour Power Outages

City Power’s scheduled outages span across different regions in Johannesburg, each with specific dates and affected areas. These outages will take place during the day from 8 AM to 4 PM to allow residents and businesses to plan for the disruptions.

1. Florida Partial Power Outage – 1 April

In Region C, a mechanical switching substation in Florida will undergo scheduled maintenance on 1 April from 8 AM to 4 PM. This outage, which was initially planned for 25 February but rescheduled, will affect parts of Florida. The areas impacted by this 8-hour power outage include:

  • Florida North
  • Florida Glen
  • Florida Hills
  • Florida View
  • Quellerina
  • Maraisburg
  • Whiteridge Industria North

Residents in these areas are advised to prepare for the planned disruptions and to stay updated on the progress of the maintenance.

2. Florida Substation Maintenance – 2 April

On 2 April, maintenance work will be carried out on the Florida Substation in Region C. The outage, which was originally scheduled for 30 March, will affect several areas from 8 AM to 4 PM. The specific locations that will experience an 8-hour power outage include:

  • Florida North
  • Maraisburg
  • Florida View
  • Florida Hills
  • Florida Glen
  • Quellerina
  • Whiteridge Industria North

This maintenance will ensure that the substation operates efficiently, reducing the risk of unexpected power failures in the future.

3. Noordwyk Substation Maintenance – 3 April

The Noordwyk Substation in Region A will undergo important maintenance on 3 April. This outage, also scheduled from 8 AM to 4 PM, will impact a large number of areas, including:

  • Country View
  • Savannah Hills
  • Development Bank of South Africa
  • Corporate Park South
  • Corporate Park North

This large-scale outage will affect a significant portion of Noordwyk, so it’s important for those in these areas to plan ahead for the day.

4. Observatory Substation Maintenance – 3 April

On the same day as Noordwyk, the Observatory Substation in Region F will also undergo maintenance. The outage will affect several neighbourhoods from 8 AM to 2 PM, and the following areas will be impacted:

  • Observatory North
  • Kensington Ext. 5
  • Cyrildene North
  • Bez Valley/Kensington
  • Cyrildene Central
  • Doornfontein
  • Bruma
  • Dewetshof
  • Langerman

Residents in these areas should take note of the planned outage and prepare for the disruption.

5. Orlando Switching Station Outage – 4 April

Finally, 4 April will see an outage at the Orlando Switching Station in Region B. This power interruption will take place from 8 AM to 2 PM and will affect areas such as:

  • Yeast Pro Number 1 and 2

This scheduled power outage, although impacting a smaller time window of 8 AM to 2 PM, will affect several critical industrial and residential areas.

How to Prepare for the Scheduled Power Outages

Being informed and prepared is the best way to reduce the inconvenience caused by the 8-hour power outages. Here are some tips to help you get ready:

  1. Charge Essential Devices: Ensure that your phones, tablets, and other electronics are fully charged the night before the outage. If you rely on your computer for work or study, ensure it is charged and ready to go before the power goes out.
  2. Backup Power Solutions: If you have a generator or inverter, check that it’s in working condition and has enough fuel or charge to last through the outage.
  3. Stock Up on Essentials: Prepare for the day by stocking up on water, non-perishable food, and any necessary medications. Plan your meals for the day to avoid using electricity during the outage.
  4. Adjust Your Schedule: If possible, try to schedule important tasks, such as work or chores that require electricity, outside of the scheduled outage times.
  5. Stay Informed: Keep up to date with City Power through their official website, social media channels, and customer service. This will allow you to receive real-time updates regarding the outages.

The Long-Term Benefits of Power Maintenance

While the 8-hour power outages may be inconvenient, they are an important part of ensuring that Johannesburg’s power grid remains reliable and efficient. Regular maintenance helps City Power to upgrade infrastructure, prevent unplanned outages, and improve load management. These efforts will ultimately contribute to fewer disruptions and a more stable power supply for the city in the future.

For residents in the affected areas, preparation is key. By following the advice above and staying informed, you can minimise the disruption and make the most of these necessary power interruptions.
