Nobuntu Mkhize dismissed from SABC and banned from FlySafair after an in-flight altercation over wine escalated into a viral confrontation.
Nobuntu Mkhize, a former brand manager at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), has been dismissed from her position and banned from FlySafair following a highly publicized in-flight altercation. The incident, which took place on December 26, 2024, escalated after a disagreement over wine selection, leading to a physical confrontation and viral social media footage.
Wine Dispute Leads to Chaos
Mkhize was travelling from Durban to Cape Town when she requested a lighter wine than the Merlot available on the FlySafair flight. When the flight attendant refused to serve an alternative, tensions flared. The altercation quickly spiralled out of control, with Mkhize allegedly throwing a can at a crew member, sparking a scuffle involving passengers who attempted to restrain her.
Viral Footage and Public Backlash
Footage of the incident circulated widely on social media, showing Mkhize making controversial statements, including racially charged remarks towards a fellow passenger. She was heard saying, “You’re a coloured from Mitchells Plain, all these gold rings but no degree.” The incident prompted widespread condemnation, including from the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), which launched an investigation.
Legal Action and Dismissal from SABC
Following the incident, FlySafair confirmed that Mkhize was handed over to police upon landing and has been permanently placed on the airline’s no-fly list. Mkhize later apologized in an interview, calling her actions an “out-of-body experience.” However, she has also taken legal action against FlySafair and the SAPS, alleging excessive force during her restraint.
Her troubles compounded when the SABC terminated her employment, citing a violation of the organization’s values of respect and integrity. Mkhize, however, maintains that her dismissal was unfair and vows to challenge it in court.
Political and Public Reactions
The incident has drawn reactions from political parties and organizations. The Democratic Alliance (DA) laid criminal charges against Mkhize for crimen injuria and assault, while the Patriotic Alliance lodged a complaint with the SAHRC. The ANC, which Mkhize invoked during her tirade, condemned her behaviour as “unruly and unbecoming,” distancing itself from her actions.
The controversy surrounding Nobuntu Mkhize’s in-flight altercation has had severe repercussions on her career and public image. As she prepares for legal battles ahead, her case serves as a cautionary tale about accountability in public and professional spaces.
