KwaZulu Natal residents are used to extreme weather conditions, but the threat of a new storm is becoming more real. The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 6 alert for disruptive rain and urged residents to take immediate measures. The KZN flood alert is still active and authorities continue to work around the clock in order to minimise damage and ensure people’s safety.

Residents Share Their Fears About a Storm Unlike Any Other

The constant rain is not just an inconvenience for many KZN residents. It’s also a reminder of previous disasters. Sipho Mthembu is a Durban-based resident who recalls the recent floods. “I remember the moment when water began to creep into our home. “We tried to stop it but, within minutes, all of our furniture was floating,”, he said, his voice filled with anxiety.

Sipho’s family is preparing for the worst as another major storm is on its way. They have prepared emergency kits, purchased essentials and closely monitor updates from SAWS.

SAWS Issues Urgent Level 6 Warning

According to SAWS, heavy rains will continue to fall through Friday, with flooding possible in areas such as eThekwini KwaDukuza and Mkhambathini.

Kevin Rae, spokesperson for SAWS, warns: “We urge residents not to travel unless absolutely necessary. The water levels are rapidly rising, and there is a high risk of property damage and accidents. “

Growing Concern About Deadly Floodwaters

Devastation is already underway. A woman in Pinetown tragically lost her own life after her car was swept away by the Pinetown River. The emergency responders desperately searched before they found her body. Bianca White, a paramedic volunteer, recalls: “We searched for many hours in the hope of a miracle. It is heartbreaking to witness such a loss of life. “

The floodwaters are responsible for more than just the death toll. They have also swallowed up roads, left cars stranded and transformed once-thriving communities into islands of despair. Upper Highway has suffered severe damage to homes and businesses.

Infrastructure Crushed Under the Weight of Storm

Residents in Kloof awoke to find streets and roads strewn with debris. Ward Councillor Caelee Laing described the chaos: The roads are impassable and homes are flooded. People are in desperate need of help. “

Thousands are left without electricity as the outages spread. Municipal workers are working against the clock to restore service, but the rain is not stopping.

High Alert for Emergency Teams

eThekwini Municipality deployed disaster response teams in order to help those who are in need. In high-risk zones, temporary shelters were set up, which provided food, blankets and a safe place for displaced families.

The spokesperson of the eThekwini Disaster Management Unit urged residents to avoid flooded rivers and roads at all costs. Please keep your children inside. It only takes a few seconds for tragedy to strike. “

Experts Warn: Climate Change is Fueling Extreme Weather

Experts in climate change are warning that these storms are not isolated incidents but are part of an alarming trend. Professor Guy Midgley is the acting director of Stellenbosch University’s School for Climate Studies. He stresses the importance of trusting SAWS warnings.

“South Africa is home to one of the world’s best weather services. They issue warnings for good reason. These alerts must be taken seriously, and we should prepare. “

To protect against future storms, environmentalists also call for stronger flood defences and better drainage systems.

Stay Safe During the KZN Flood Alert

Act now if you live in an area prone to flooding. What you should do is:

  1. Do not drive or walk in floodwaters; even ankle-deep waters can be dangerous.
  2. Stay informed– Keep abreast of SAWS updates and municipal alerts.
  3. Prepare a First Aid Kit– Have water, food, medications, and flashlights on hand.
  4. Move to Higher Ground If you are in danger, leave your home before it is too late.
  5. Emergency Contacts eThekwini’s emergency number is 041 322 4457.

Communities Coming Together in Crisis

Residents of KZN are displaying incredible resilience despite the chaos. Volunteers are distributing blankets and food to neighbours, and the social media is awash with offers of help.

Nomusa Dube Ncube, KZN Premier, praised the spirit of the community: “In these times, we must stand united.” We have emergency teams that are working hard, but citizens must also be vigilant. “

Donations are needed to help those in need. Consider donating to relief efforts via reputable organizations if you want to help.

What Next after More Rain?

Unfortunately, it’s not over yet. Meteorologists are predicting continued rain through the weekend. This will increase the risk of flooding and landslides.

SAWS’s Mbali Gumbi warns that “While the rains are expected to be heavier on Friday, it is likely to continue through Saturday.” Residents are encouraged to be prepared. “

Stay Alert and Safe

The KZN flood alert serves as a reminder of the power of nature and of the importance of being prepared. While communities prepare for more rain, they must focus on safety and resilience. The authorities are doing their best, but personal vigilance is what will ultimately determine whether or not someone lives.

Visit the South African Weather Service for real-time updates and listen to local emergency broadcasts.
