After weeks of anticipation, Volvo has officially introduced the ES90, marking a significant milestone as its first all-electric sedan. Positioned as the electric counterpart to the S90—which will continue production with upcoming updates—the Volvo ES90 joins the expanding EV lineup, built on the advanced second-generation Scalable Product Architecture (SPA2) platform. This cutting-edge model follows in the footsteps of the EX90 SUV but brings enhanced technology and improved charging capabilities.
Modern Design with Classic Influences
Touted as the most technologically advanced vehicle to date, the ES90 shares design cues with its EX90 and EX30 siblings. However, it distinguishes itself with a sleek coupe-like roofline and a short rear overhang, reminiscent of previous models like the S40 and S60.

At the front, the ES90 features the signature Iron Mark-sealed grille alongside the distinctive Thor’s Hammer LED headlights. The rear showcases an eye-catching C-shaped light cluster, with daytime running LEDs placed along the outer window surround.
Dimensionally, the company has confirmed a 3.1-meter wheelbase, along with a 424-liter trunk that expands to 733 liters when the rear seats are folded. Additionally, a 22-liter storage compartment is provided under the hood.
For the first time, buyers will have the choice of four different alloy wheel designs, ranging from 20 inches to an optional 22-inch configuration.

Cutting-Edge Technology
The Volvo ES90 is more than just an electric vehicle—it is a “software-defined” product that integrates seamlessly into the broader “Superset” ecosystem, which includes the EX90. Under the hood of its digital architecture, the sedan is powered by Nvidia’s advanced Drive AGX Orin processor, paired with a LiDAR system similar to the EX90’s setup.
Inside, the ES90 incorporates the latest Google-powered Android software and a futuristic AI-driven Head-Up Display (HUD) projected directly onto the windshield. Connectivity features include in-car 5G and a suite of next-generation safety technologies, though Volvo has yet to reveal all specific details.

In keeping with the minimalist interior philosophy, the ES90’s cabin is streamlined, with most controls housed within a 14.5-inch central infotainment screen, which comes standard across all models. Additional features include quad-zone climate control and a nine-inch freestanding digital instrument cluster.
Depending on the trim level, the ES90 may also be equipped with a surround-view camera system, customizable ambient lighting, and a premium 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system featuring Dolby Atmos technology. A mode replicating the legendary acoustics of Abbey Road Studios in London is also included.

Built on an 800-volt electrical system, the ES90 boasts superior power and range compared to its SUV counterpart, thanks to a larger 106-kWh battery. The lineup consists of three different powertrain configurations:
- Single Motor Variant: Features a 92-kWh battery producing 245 kW, delivering an estimated range of 644 km.
 - Twin Motor Variant: Utilizes dual motors for all-wheel-drive capability, generating 330 kW and extending the range to approximately 700 km.
 - Twin Motor Performance Model: The top-tier option delivers an impressive 500 kW, maintaining the 700 km range.

Global Availability and Future Prospects
The ES90 is already available in select European markets, with prices in the UK starting at £69,650 (approximately R1,647,085). Expansion into China and the United States is expected by 2026.
As for South Africa, there is no official confirmation on the ES90’s arrival, despite plans to introduce the EX90 in the country later this year. With an increasing focus on electrification, it remains to be seen whether the ES90 will make its way to South African shores in the near future.
