Stellenbosch FC took another step closer to Nedbank Cup glory with a solid 2-0 victory over Polokwane City on Thursday evening. The Maroons delivered a dominant display at home, securing their spot in the quarter-finals thanks to a first-half own goal and a well-taken finish by Devin Titus. While Polokwane City showed moments of promise, they struggled to break down Stellenbosch’s resolute defence. The win further cements Stellies as serious contenders for the prestigious cup.

Early Dominance Sets the Tone

Stellenbosch FC secured their place in the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals with a commanding 2-0 victory over Polokwane City on Thursday evening. The Maroons welcomed back Fawaaz Basadien from suspension, while Genino Palace and Lesiba Nku were also reinstated into the starting lineup. Polokwane City, meanwhile, saw the return of Manuel Sapunga following an injury.

The hosts took the lead just 12 minutes into the game when a well-orchestrated move from midfield ended with Polokwane’s Bulelani Nikani deflecting Devon Titus’s shot into his own net. Moments later, Titus had a chance to double the advantage, but his first-time effort from inside the box was well saved by Sapunga.

Titus Doubles the Lead Before Halftime

Stellenbosch maintained their attacking intent, with Nku’s half-volley bouncing off the defence and falling for Titus, whose shot at the back post was once again denied by Sapunga. However, the forward would not be denied for long, as he finally found the back of the net eight minutes before halftime. A precise cross from Khomotjo Lekoloane was met by Titus, who guided a first-time finish in off the far post to give Stellies a deserved 2-0 lead.

Polokwane Struggle to Break Down Solid Defence

After the break, Polokwane City attempted to fight back but struggled to find a way past Stellenbosch’s well-drilled defence. The Maroons continued to push forward, with Titus seeing plenty of the ball in attacking areas, but Sapunga remained resolute in goal, preventing further damage.

Denied a Third, But Job Done for Stellies

In an effort to change their fortunes, Polokwane introduced veteran forward Puleng Tlolane for Thato Letshedi midway through the second half. Stellenbosch thought they had added a third goal late on when Basadien produced a top-corner finish from a tight angle, but the assistant referee ruled it out for offside.

Despite missing out on a third, Stellenbosch had done enough to secure their place in the last eight of the competition.

Stellenbosch Eye Further Nedbank Cup Glory

This victory highlights Stellenbosch FC’s strong cup form as they continue their quest for silverware. Their defensive solidity and attacking sharpness were crucial in overcoming a determined Polokwane City side.

As the competition progresses, the Maroons will aim to maintain their momentum and push towards the final stages of the Nedbank Cup. With their next challenge in the quarter-finals, Stellenbosch will be eager to build on this impressive performance.
