SONA 2025

The State of the Nation Address (SONA) 2025 is set to take place on Thursday, 6 February 2025, at 19:00, with President Cyril Ramaphosa delivering the much-anticipated speech at Cape Town City Hall. In preparation for this high-profile event, the City of Cape Town has announced extensive road closures and restrictions that will impact traffic flow in and around the CBD from 3 February to 19 February 2025.

Road Closures & Restrictions Leading Up to SONA 2025

A series of road closures will be in effect before, during, and after the event, with additional restrictions in place on 4 and 5 February for rehearsals. These measures will significantly affect major routes, including the M3 and N2 highways, as well as multiple streets in the Cape Town city center.

Key Roads Affected on SONA 2025 Day (6 February 2025):

🚧 M3 and N2 Highways – Expect lane closures and possible detours.
🚧 Adderley Street & Wale Street – Limited access, especially near the City Hall.
🚧 Parliamentary Precinct – Roads surrounding Parliament will be under strict security measures.
🚧 Roeland Street, Plein Street & Darling Street – Restricted access due to security protocols.

For a detailed list of road closures, check the official City of Cape Town updates here: Road Closures List.

Traffic Impact: Expect Delays & Limited Parking

Commuters and motorists should anticipate significant delays, detours, and limited parking availability in the Cape Town CBD. To minimize disruptions, residents and businesses are urged to plan their travel routes in advance.

What Commuters Need to Know:

✔️ Use public transport where possible to avoid parking issues.
✔️ Allow extra travel time due to traffic congestion.
✔️ Avoid non-essential travel in the CBD during peak closure periods.
✔️ Follow road signage and alternative route advisories for smooth navigation.

Security Measures & Access Control

The SONA event is not only a national address but also a high-security event. Expect increased police visibility, restricted pedestrian access in some areas, and heightened security screenings near the City Hall precinct and Parliamentary buildings.

Pedestrians may experience delays at security checkpoints, and prohibited areas will be clearly marked. Those who work in the CBD or have scheduled appointments are advised to carry identification and allow extra time for access checks.

Stay Updated: Where to Find the Latest Traffic & Road Information

The City of Cape Town advises residents to stay informed by:
📢 Monitoring local news outlets for real-time traffic updates.
📢 Checking social media channels like Twitter (@CityofCT) and @TrafficSA for live updates.
📢 Listening to radio traffic reports for route adjustments.

Final Thoughts: Plan Ahead for a Smooth Experience

With the SONA 2025 road closures affecting Cape Town’s CBD from 3 to 19 February, it is essential for motorists, businesses, and residents to prepare accordingly. Whether you’re commuting for work, heading into the city for an appointment, or simply passing through, planning your route in advance will help you avoid frustration and delays. Stay informed. Plan ahead. Travel smart.
