Weekend weather alert – Stay informed with the latest weekend weather alert from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) as extreme weather conditions are forecasted for Saturday, 1 February 2025.

Severe Weather Warnings for Saturday

Impact-Based Warnings

A weekend weather alert has been issued, highlighting severe thunderstorms over Limpopo and Mpumalanga. A yellow level 2 warning warns of heavy downpours, localized flooding in low-lying areas, roads, and bridges, as well as potential property and infrastructure damage in these provinces.

Fire Danger Warnings

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in the Northern Cape and western Free State. Residents should exercise caution and avoid activities that could ignite fires.

Heat Wave Advisory

A persistent heat wave will continue in:

  • North West and Eastern Free State until Monday.
  • Mpumalanga and Limpopo Lowveld as well as the Limpopo Valley until Sunday.
  • Gauteng and the western Bushveld of Limpopo until at least Saturday.

Provincial Weather Forecast for Saturday, 1 February

Gauteng

Residents can expect partly cloudy and hot conditions, with very hot temperatures in the extreme north. Isolated showers and thundershowers are expected in the afternoon. The UVB sunburn index is very high, so precautions against prolonged sun exposure are advised.

Mpumalanga

Morning fog over the southern escarpment will clear, giving way to partly cloudy and warm conditions. Expect isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers, with scattered storms over central parts. The Lowveld will experience hot weather.

Limpopo

Partly cloudy and hot to very hot conditions will prevail. Isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers are expected, becoming scattered over central areas.

North West

Expect partly cloudy, hot to very hot conditions, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the extreme east.

Free State

Morning fog patches are expected in the extreme east and south. The rest of the province will experience partly cloudy, windy, and hot to very hot weather, with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers in the extreme east.

Northern Cape

Morning fog patches in the extreme southeast will clear, making way for fine, windy, and hot to very hot conditions. The coastal areas will be cooler, with partly cloudy skies developing in the east by the afternoon.

Western Cape

Cloudy conditions will dominate the east and central parts in the morning. The rest of the province will be fine, with partly cloudy skies along the south coast and adjacent interior. It will be cool to warm but hot in parts of the Central and Little Karoo. The UVB sunburn index is extreme—residents should take necessary precautions.

Eastern Cape (Western Half)

Morning fog will give way to fine and warm to hot weather throughout the province.

Eastern Cape (Eastern Half)

Cloudy and cool to warm conditions are expected, with isolated showers and rain in the east. The west will be partly cloudy, warm, and hot in some areas.

KwaZulu-Natal

A weekend weather alert warns of cloudy, cool to warm conditions with scattered showers and thundershowers, becoming isolated in the extreme northeast. The UVB sunburn index is high—residents should limit sun exposure.
