Temperatures to Soar into the High Thirties: Essential Tips to Stay Cool During Gauteng’s Heatwave
Gauteng residents are gearing up for sweltering temperatures this weekend as the province faces its fourth heatwave of the season. According to Gauteng Weather, this intense heatwave will persist at least until Saturday, with temperatures expected to peak in the high thirties.
What to Expect from the Heatwave
The region will see partly cloudy skies paired with very hot weather, especially in the extreme northern areas. Johannesburg will experience temperatures starting at a warm 19°C and climbing to a scorching 33°C. Pretoria’s temperatures will begin at 21°C, eventually hitting a high of 35°C, while Vereeniging is expected to peak at 34°C.
Adding to the heat concerns, the UVB sunburn index for the region is classified as “very high,” urging residents to take necessary precautions to protect their skin and health.
Warnings from Authorities
City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, has cautioned residents about the potential health risks of extreme heat. He advises:
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
- Avoid direct sunlight, particularly during peak hours between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
- For those working outdoors, take regular breaks and consume water frequently.
Exposure to such high temperatures could result in heat exhaustion, heat cramps, or even heat stroke, Mulaudzi warned.
Scorching Conditions Across Provinces
The heatwave isn’t limited to Gauteng. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) predicts persistently high temperatures across the Mpumalanga and Limpopo Lowveld, as well as the Limpopo Valley, until Sunday. The western Bushveld of Limpopo will also feel the brunt of the heatwave through Saturday.
Adding to the challenging weather, SAWS has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms, potentially causing damaging winds, hail, and localized flooding in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, the Mpumalanga escarpment, and the northeastern Eastern Cape.
How to Stay Safe During the Heatwave
To endure the soaring temperatures, here are some essential tips:
- Stay Indoors: Minimize outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
- Hydrate: Keep a water bottle handy and drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Wear Light Clothing: Opt for loose, lightweight, and light-coloured clothing to stay cool.
- Avoid Heavy Meals: Choose smaller, lighter meals to help regulate body heat.
- Look Out for Vulnerable Individuals: Check on the elderly, children, and pets, as they are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
As Gauteng braces for another intense heatwave, it’s crucial for residents to prioritize their health and safety. Stay hydrated, avoid unnecessary sun exposure, and follow the advice of local authorities to beat the heat this weekend.
