Bafana Bafana’s journey in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has been a testament to their growth and resilience under the guidance of head coach Hugo Broos. After a commendable performance in the group stages, Broos shared his insights and reactions to the team’s progress.

A Tough Group, but a Promising Opportunity

Bafana Bafana’s coach, Hugo Broos, has weighed in on the team’s prospects following the draw for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). South Africa has been placed in Group B alongside Egypt, Zimbabwe, and Angola. While Broos acknowledged that the group is challenging, he remains confident about Bafana Bafana’s ability to progress to the knockout rounds. He stated, “In general, I think we can be satisfied. It is not a very easy group, but I think we have a great opportunity to qualify for the next round.”

Broos’ positive outlook reflects his belief that South Africa has what it takes to succeed, even in a tough group. He further emphasized that, in AFCON, anything can happen after the group stages, which keeps the door open for surprises and possibilities. With his experience and leadership, Broos is confident Bafana Bafana will continue their upward trajectory following a third-place finish in the previous AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos shares his thoughts after the confirmation of the 2025 AFCON draw on Monday night.

Egypt: The Team to Beat in Group B

When it comes to the team to watch in Group B, Broos points to Egypt as the frontrunner. Despite Egypt’s disappointing performance in the 2021 AFCON, where they were eliminated earlier than expected, Broos believes the Pharaohs have regained their form. “Egypt is the favourite to win the group… they have built a very good team. They did very well in the qualifiers, so they will be the team to beat for first place,” Broos said.

Broos is aware of the challenges that Egypt presents, but he is also keen on ensuring Bafana Bafana is fully prepared to compete with them.

Zimbabwe: A Familiar Rival

Broos also commented on Bafana Bafana’s upcoming match against Zimbabwe, a regional rival that always provides a tough challenge. This encounter will be the fourth time the teams have faced off in recent years, with Broos noting that Zimbabwe is always a difficult opponent. “Zimbabwe is a neighbour of South Africa and it’s always a very difficult game for us,” Broos stated.

Despite the tough history between the two nations, Broos is confident that South Africa can come out on top. He pointed out the positive record in their past encounters, having won three of their four meetings, including one draw. “So, winning against Zimbabwe is very possible in the AFCON,” Broos said, underscoring his team’s ability to handle the pressure in this regional derby.

Angola: A New Challenge

Angola presents a different challenge for Bafana Bafana, as Broos admitted that he doesn’t have as much detailed knowledge about the Angolan team. “Angola is for me a team I don’t know really very well. So, it will be very important to do a good analysis of our opponent Angola, and to be well prepared to play that game,” he explained.

Given that Angola is less familiar territory for South Africa, Broos emphasized the importance of thorough research and strategic planning. Preparation will be key to understanding Angola’s style of play, ensuring that Bafana Bafana approaches the match with the right mindset and tactics.

Looking Forward: Optimism for Progression

Despite the tough challenges presented by Egypt, Zimbabwe, and Angola, Broos remains optimistic about South Africa’s chances of advancing to the knockout rounds. His target is clear: to do better than the third-place finish Bafana Bafana secured in the 2023 AFCON. He reiterated his belief that anything is possible in the knockout stages, as the unpredictable nature of AFCON opens up opportunities for surprises.
