Emergency teams across South Africa are on high alert following severe weather warnings issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS). The agency has warned of disruptive rain and potential flooding in multiple provinces, urging residents to prepare for adverse conditions.
KZN Faces Level 8 Weather Warning
SAWS upgraded its alert for KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) to an orange level 8 weather warning on Sunday, signaling a high risk of significant disruption. The warning covers coastal regions of KZN, where heavy rainfall and flooding are expected on Monday.
An orange level 6 warning has also been issued for most parts of KZN, excluding the south-west. Affected municipalities include:

Gauteng and Other Provinces Under Threat
In Gauteng, the weather warning has been classified as an orange level 5. This alert includes the Highveld and escarpment areas of Mpumalanga, south-central Limpopo, north-eastern Free State, and south-western KZN. These regions could experience flooding, damaged infrastructure, and transportation disruptions.
For the Free State, North West, eastern parts of the Eastern Cape, and areas in Limpopo and Mpumalanga, SAWS has issued a yellow level 2 weather warning. Although less severe, this indicates the possibility of localized flooding and damage.
Severe Storms Wreak Havoc in Welkom
The Free State town of Welkom is already dealing with the aftermath of destructive storms on Sunday. The Matjhabeng Local Municipality reported significant damage to schools, businesses, and residential areas.
Affected properties include:
- Welkom Fire Station
- HTS School
- Unitas School
- Numerous homes and local businesses
Emergency teams have been deployed to assess the situation and provide immediate assistance.
Local Authorities Respond to Weather Warnings
Matjhabeng Local Municipality spokesperson, Tshediso Tlali, emphasized the importance of restoring essential services.
“In collaboration with relevant stakeholders, we are prioritizing the restoration of essential services and infrastructure, particularly the fire station and affected schools,” said Tlali.
Residents with storm damage to their homes are urged to report incidents to local ward councilors to ensure timely support. Tlali also appealed to the community to stay safe by avoiding damaged areas and cooperating with emergency response teams.
