Johannesburg Residents Brace for Power Interruptions Amid City Power’s Essential Maintenance Program
Johannesburg residents are set to face a series of planned power interruptions throughout January as City Power conducts essential maintenance across multiple regions. While load reduction measures remain suspended until the end of the month, the utility has urged consumers to use electricity conservatively to avoid potential reinstatement of emergency load reduction.
Planned Maintenance Schedule for January
City Power’s maintenance program aims to improve service reliability by addressing infrastructure concerns. Below are the scheduled outages for key areas:
Region A
- Noordwyk Substation and Randjespark Ext. 72 Switching Station: Maintenance on 7 January (09:00 to 17:00) will affect Business Park North, Corporate Park, and Park of Business Park South.
- Staugh Vorster Switching Substation: Scheduled for 21 January, impacting 15th and 16th Road, including the pharmaceutical facility on 16th Road.
- Brandweer SWS: On 14 January, Forbes, Segal Road, Midway Heights, Harry Galaun, and nearby roads will experience interruptions.
- Halfway Gardens Ext. 22 SWS: Maintenance on 10 January will affect Harry Galaun, Northfolk, Le-Roux, Adar, and roads 3rd to 7th.
Region E
- Alexandra Substation: Maintenance periods are planned for 14 January, affecting Far East Bank Extensions 7 and 8, and 15 January (08:00 to 16:00) for Tsutsumani, Last Gate, Bohlabelo, and EXT 10.
Region C
- Stormill Switching Station: Maintenance on 9 January will affect the Stormill area.
- William Nicol SWS: Scheduled for 12 January, impacting Florida Park, Florida Hills, and Flora Cliff.
Region F
- Central A Substation: Maintenance on 16 January (08:00 to 16:00) will affect Marshalltown, Marshall Street, Main Street, and Eloff Street.
City Power’s Message to Residents
City Power emphasizes that these interruptions are vital for long-term improvements in electricity services. They reminded residents to treat all power supply points as live during outages, as supply may be restored unexpectedly.
The utility stated, “We regret any inconvenience caused by these interruptions, but the maintenance work is necessary to enhance the reliability of our network.”
Conservative Electricity Usage Urged
Despite the suspension of load reduction until January’s end, City Power has warned that significant spikes in electricity consumption could lead to its reinstatement. Residents are encouraged to minimize unnecessary energy use, especially during peak hours.
