The South African automotive market experienced a pleasant surprise in 2024 with the launch of the Mahindra XUV 3X0. Officially introduced in mid-September, the XUV 3X0 quickly became a sales phenomenon, recording 1,114 units sold within just two months.

A Sales Hit Against Expectations

The XUV 3X0—pronounced “three-ex-oh”—is a heavily revamped version of the XUV 300. Its unexpected sales success has placed it as Mahindra’s second-best-selling vehicle after the locally assembled Pik Up. This achievement underscores its ability to compete with the increasingly dominant Chinese SUVs in the sub-R500,000 price range.

Bold New Styling

Mahindra discontinued the XUV 300 to focus entirely on the XUV 3X0, which retains its predecessor’s dimensions while adopting a more robust and rugged appearance. The design, likened to a bulldog’s stance, replaces the softer aesthetics of the previous model.

Key design features include an X-themed front fascia, angular headlights, C-shaped LED daytime running lights, and wraparound taillights. The aggressive styling is complemented by faux silver skid plates, black cladding around the wheel arches, black roof rails, and 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels exclusive to the flagship AX7 L trim. Available in striking colors like Nebula Blue with contrasting roof options, the XUV 3X0 stands out in its segment.

A Fresh Take Inside

The interior of the XUV 3X0 is as dramatic as its exterior, representing a significant leap from the XUV 300. While the piano black trim may polarize opinions, the use of physical buttons and dials for controls is a welcome feature.

The infotainment system is upgraded to a 10.25-inch touchscreen, standard on most trims, alongside a digital instrument cluster of the same size. This setup integrates wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mahindra’s AdrenoX software, making it user-friendly despite initial appearances.

Passenger comfort is a priority, although taller rear passengers might find headroom constrained due to the panoramic sunroof. Practicality is decent, with a 364-liter boot that can expand using the 60/40 split rear seats, though they don’t fold completely flat.

Performance and Driving Dynamics

Powered by a 1.2-liter turbocharged petrol engine producing 82 kW and 200 Nm, the XUV 3X0 delivers solid performance. The engine’s responsiveness is complemented by drive modes—Zip (eco), Zap (normal), and Zoom (sport). However, the six-speed automatic transmission can feel slightly hesitant during low-speed driving.

On the road, the XUV 3X0 impresses with its composed handling and agile dynamics, thanks to its 201 mm ground clearance and well-tuned suspension. While rough surfaces can create some discomfort, overall ride quality is commendable. Fuel consumption averaged 7.5 L/100 km, but longer highway drives could reduce this to around 6.5 L/100 km.

Mahindra XUV 3X0 Features

Below is a table summarizing the standout features of the Mahindra XUV 3X0:

A Strong Contender

The Mahindra XUV 3X0 has proven itself as a serious competitor in the South African SUV market. Its bold styling, feature-rich interior, and impressive performance have resonated with buyers, making it a worthy rival to Chinese SUVs in this price bracket.

While it isn’t without flaws—such as limited rear headroom and occasional transmission quirks—the XUV 3X0 delivers exceptional value for money. Its success is a testament to Mahindra’s growing presence in the global automotive market, and it promises to solidify the brand’s foothold in South Africa. At just R404,999 for the top-spec AX7 L trim, the XUV 3X0 is a refreshing alternative that is hard to overlook.
