Orlando Pirates’ Relebohile Mofokeng and Springbok legend Eben Etzebeth have both been named GQ Sportspersons of the Year as part of the Men of the Year 2024 awards. Their remarkable performances in football and rugby have earned them widespread recognition, highlighting their exceptional talent, leadership, and influence in their respective sports. This prestigious honor marks a significant milestone in both athletes’ careers.

Relebohile Mofokeng’s Breakthrough Year

Relebohile Mofokeng, the 20-year-old attacking sensation from Orlando Pirates, had an outstanding year that made him one of South Africa’s brightest young football stars. Mofokeng’s performances for the Sea Robbers were nothing short of spectacular, with his contributions helping the team secure a second-place finish in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) last season. His technical ability, vision, and flair on the field have made him one of the most exciting players in local football.

One of Mofokeng’s most memorable moments came in the Nedbank Cup final, where he scored a dramatic last-minute goal to seal a 1-0 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns. The goal, which clinched the trophy for Orlando Pirates, not only showcased Mofokeng’s composure under pressure but also solidified his place in the hearts of the club’s supporters.

Apart from his domestic achievements, Mofokeng’s exceptional form earned him a call-up to the South African national team. His debut on the international stage marked a significant milestone in his career, and his performances with Bafana Bafana have further confirmed his potential as a future star. Recently, Mofokeng has been linked with a move to Barcelona, with the Spanish giants reportedly keeping an eye on his rapid rise in the game.

GQ South Africa recognized Mofokeng’s breakthrough year by naming him Sportsperson of the Year, highlighting his rapid development in the football world. The publication’s announcement on Instagram praised his talent, saying, “Mofokeng is quickly establishing himself as one of the most impressive talents in local football.”

Eben Etzebeth: A Year of Unprecedented Achievements

Eben Etzebeth’s 2024 was another chapter in a career defined by excellence, leadership, and relentless commitment to the sport. The Springbok lock played a pivotal role in South Africa’s triumph in the Rugby Championship, contributing to the team’s dominance in southern hemisphere rugby. Etzebeth’s performances were a key factor in the Springboks’ success, helping them maintain their status as one of the world’s top rugby teams.

Etzebeth’s achievements didn’t stop with the national team. In addition to his international success, Etzebeth captained the Sharks to a historic victory in the European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) title. The Sharks became the first-ever South African team to win the prestigious title, a remarkable feat that highlighted Etzebeth’s leadership both on and off the field.

As a result of his performances, Etzebeth became the most-capped Springbok in history, surpassing former record-holder John Smit. His 129 international caps underscore his enduring impact on the Springboks and his unmatched consistency at the highest level of the game. Etzebeth’s leadership, physicality, and tactical awareness have made him one of rugby’s most respected players, and his place in South Africa’s sporting history is firmly secured.

In recognition of his incredible achievements, GQ South Africa named Etzebeth as Sportsperson of the Year. The publication praised his legacy, stating, “Etzebeth is quickly establishing himself as one of the most impressive talents in rugby history.”

Etzebeth’s World Rugby Nomination

Further cementing his exceptional year, Etzebeth was nominated for the World Rugby Player of the Year Award. His performances for the Springboks, alongside his leadership of the Sharks, earned him a place among the elite in the rugby world. Though the award ultimately went to his Springbok teammate Pieter-Steph du Toit, Etzebeth’s inclusion in the shortlist was a testament to his remarkable contributions to the sport.

A Bright Future for Both Athletes

Both Mofokeng and Etzebeth have proven themselves to be exceptional athletes who continue to set new standards in their respective sports. Mofokeng’s meteoric rise in football has made him a household name in South Africa, and his international potential is undeniable. Similarly, Etzebeth’s continued success with the Springboks and the Sharks underscores his legacy as one of rugby’s greatest players.

The GQ Sportsperson of the Year awards celebrate the hard work, dedication, and excellence displayed by athletes who inspire future generations. With both Mofokeng and Etzebeth receiving this prestigious recognition, their achievements in 2024 have only just begun to shape the future of South African sport.
