South Africa’s vehicle market surged in November, marking its strongest month of the year with nearly 50,000 units sold, the highest sales figure in 2024 so far. The upward trend in November vehicle sales follows a consistent recovery pattern, buoyed by recent interest rate cuts.

A New Leader in the Market

A major surprise in November was the Volkswagen Polo Vivo’s ascent to the top of the sales charts, overtaking the Toyota Hilux, which had been the country’s best-seller for several months. This marks the first time since May 2023 that the Hilux has been dethroned as the top-selling vehicle.

The Polo Vivo, built in Kariega, led the way with 2,999 units sold, surpassing the Hilux by 297 units, which managed 2,702. The Toyota Corolla Cross, assembled in Prospecton, finished third with 2,655 units sold, followed closely by the Ford Ranger (2,248 units).

Other Key Highlights

In the fifth spot, the Suzuki Swift emerged as the highest-selling non-locally produced vehicle, with 1,766 units sold. It was followed by the Isuzu D-Max, which finished sixth with 1,764 units sold, rounding out the top six with models produced locally in South Africa.

In a competitive top 10 list, Hyundai’s Grand i10 and Toyota’s Starlet took seventh and eighth positions, with 1,395 and 1,238 units sold, respectively. Chinese brands also made a notable appearance, with the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro ranking as the best-selling Chinese vehicle, moving 1,191 units, ahead of the GWM Haval Jolion, which secured 1,062 sales.

November Vehicle Sales: Market Breakdown

According to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa), November’s vehicle sales totaled 48,585 units, an 8.8% increase from the 44,927 units sold in the same month last year. This marks the second consecutive month of growth, fueled by reduced interest rates following a recent 25-basis-point cut by the Reserve Bank.

Passenger vehicle sales saw the most significant increase, with a 20% uptick from 29,525 to 35,101 units. However, sales in other segments continued to struggle. Light commercial vehicle sales fell by 16.3%, dropping from 12,937 units in October to 10,827 in November. Medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles also recorded declines, with the former down by 9.2% and the latter experiencing a marginal decrease of 0.5%.

Exports remained a weak spot, dropping by 28.6% from 42,641 units in November 2023 to 30,431 in November 2024. Despite these challenges, Naamsa noted that the overall market is only 3.5% behind last year’s figures, with a stronger year-end performance expected.

Top 10 Brands

Toyota continued its dominance in November, remaining the best-selling brand with 12,106 units sold. Volkswagen followed in second place with 6,321 units, while Suzuki retained third position with 6,004 units. Other top-performing brands included Ford (3,071), Hyundai (2,940), and Isuzu (2,061). Newcomers Chery and GWM took seventh and eighth spots, with 2,006 and 1,847 units sold, respectively. Kia rounded out the top 10 with 1,662 units, ahead of Renault’s 1,505.

Looking Ahead

The outlook for the South African automotive market remains cautiously optimistic, with further interest rate cuts expected to improve vehicle affordability. However, Naamsa cautioned that, despite recent improvements, the market is unlikely to return to pre-pandemic levels anytime soon.

As the year draws to a close, industry experts are hopeful that continued economic recovery and favourable conditions will support sustained growth in 2024, particularly in the passenger vehicle segment.

As vehicle sales continue to rise, the dominance of popular models like the Volkswagen Polo Vivo and the Toyota Hilux reflects the evolving preferences of South African consumers, balancing domestic production with a growing appetite for global brands.
