Gauteng braces for severe thunderstorms and potential hail as Johannesburg’s emergency services remain vigilant.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a weather warning for Gauteng, with severe thunderstorms and the possibility of large hailstones expected to hit the region. Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) are on high alert, ready to respond to emergencies stemming from these severe conditions. Residents are urged to remain cautious, stay indoors, and avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding. SAWS has also cautioned about localized flooding, especially in high-risk zones.
Safety Measures and Precautions
The EMS has deployed additional resources to ensure swift responses to any incidents. Key areas of concern include informal settlements, low-water bridges, and flood-prone zones in most parts of the City of Johannesburg. Residents are encouraged to secure loose items outdoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor updates from local authorities.

The SAWS warned that the thunderstorms, expected to intensify later in the day, could disrupt power and infrastructure in some parts of the province. Motorists have been advised to be extra vigilant due to potential reduced visibility and slippery roads.
Emergency Contacts and Preparedness
Residents are urged to have emergency contact numbers on hand and report any fallen trees, blocked roads, or dangerous flooding to Johannesburg’s EMS. The department is also ready to handle situations involving downed power lines and damage to property.
With weather conditions expected to worsen, the SAWS and EMS recommend staying indoors and following official safety guidelines. For updates, residents can follow the official social media accounts of the SAWS and Johannesburg EMS.
