Consumers to Return Top Score Instant Porridge for a Full Refund

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued an urgent recall of Top Score Instant Porridge following the tragic deaths of three children linked to its consumption. This popular porridge, known for its affordability and convenience, has been recalled after being implicated in a severe health crisis.

Top Score Instant Porridge is a well-known brand across South Africa produced by the Spar group, offering an instant, nutritious meal designed for quick preparation. Widely consumed, especially in low-income households, porridge has long been a staple for many families due to its affordability and high nutritional value. However, the product’s recent association with a serious health concern has led to its recall.

The recall was initiated after the heartbreaking deaths of three children in the Eastern Cape who fell ill shortly after consuming Top Score Instant Porridge. According to reports, the children have been identified as Lithembelihle Bambela, Iminathi Bambela and Live Ndudane from Mdantsane exhibited signs of food poisoning before their untimely passing. This tragic event has shaken the country, prompting the NCC to act swiftly in partnership with relevant health authorities. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of contamination and whether it is isolated to specific batches of the product.

The NCC is working closely with the National Health Department and other authorities to ensure that affected products are removed from store shelves, while laboratory tests are being conducted to confirm whether a contaminant or other safety breach is to blame for these tragic deaths.

The NCC has urged all consumers who have purchased Top Score Instant Porridge to return the product to the retailer for a full refund, regardless of whether the porridge has been opened or not. Retailers have been notified of the recall, and no proof of purchase is required to return the product.

Consumers are advised not to consume any Top Score Instant Porridge until further notice from the NCC. The Commission is also urging anyone who may experience food poisoning symptoms after consuming the porridge to seek immediate medical attention.

The NCC is maintaining strict oversight during the recall process to prevent further risks to public health. Investigations into the exact cause of the contamination are still underway, and the Commission is expected to provide updates once the laboratory results are conclusive.

“Consumers are urged to immediately return the affected product as its further use may be harmful,” said NCC acting commissioner, Hardin Ratshisusu.

In the meantime, the NCC has assured the public that all possible steps are being taken to safeguard consumer health. Retailers are also being closely monitored to ensure compliance with the recall directive. Consumer safety remains the highest priority as the country mourns the loss of these three children.

This unfortunate incident highlights the importance of food safety regulations and rapid responses to protect public health. The NCC’s proactive measures to recall Top Score Instant Porridge and offer refunds aim to prevent further harm and ensure accountability. As investigations continue, consumers are encouraged to follow safety guidelines and return the product immediately for a refund.
