Controversial businessman Brown Mogotsi has once again made headlines, this time over an alleged attempt on his life in Vosloorus. The incident, which took place on a deserted gravel road on Monday night, has ignited widespread speculation. Police are now investigating whether the attack was genuine or staged, a possibility that could carry serious legal consequences.

What Happened in Vosloorus?
Mogotsi was reportedly driving a red Chevrolet sedan at around 10pm when unknown gunmen opened fire on his vehicle. The South African Police Service (SAPS) recovered 11 bullet casings from the scene. His car, which had worn tyres and was in poor condition, was later found riddled with bullet holes — two of which struck the driver’s seat.
Journalists who visited the scene, described it as an isolated area near the N3 highway. Residents who arrived shortly after the shooting said Mogotsi refused help and declined to call the police, claiming:
“Police were going to finish me off.”
SAPS Raises Concerns Over Possible Staging
SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that although a case of attempted murder has been registered, Mogotsi refused to open a case. He was expected to report to the Vosloorus Police Station at 8am the next day but did not arrive.
Mathe cautioned:
“We hope this incident was not staged; otherwise, he could face charges for defeating the ends of justice.”
The vehicle has since been towed to the police station for forensic analysis. A white box of unknown contents was recovered from the passenger seat during inspection by ballistic experts.
Eyewitness Account Casts Doubt on Mogotsi’s Version
A couple claim they witnessed a man matching Mogotsi’s description firing shots himself. According to their account, the red sedan pulled off the road before the driver got out and discharged a firearm.
“He [the driver] parked next to housing and fired shots. My partner and I ran in different directions,” the woman said.
