What Is Load Reduction — And Why It’s Still Happening
Load reduction is different from load shedding. It is a targeted interruption in areas where local networks are strained, often due to illegal connections, overloaded transformers or network faults. Eskom applies load reduction even when national load shedding is suspended, to safeguard infrastructure.
In a recent announcement, Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said the government aims to eliminate load reduction across the country within the next 12 months, citing improved capacity and smarter metering.
Nevertheless, until that goal is fully realised, stay informed of your area’s schedule.

How to Read the Schedule
- Each day, two time blocks are listed: 05h00 – 09h00 (morning) and 17h00 – 22h00 (evening).
- Areas are assigned to “Blocks” (e.g. Block A, B, C, … J).
- If your area is listed in a block for that day, you should expect a power interruption during those hours.
- The schedule rotates, so your area’s block may shift across days.
Now, let’s walk through each day.

What You Can Do to Prepare
- Check your block and times. Know when your area may be offline.
- Schedule essential tasks. Use power-hungry appliances outside peak hours.
- Charge devices ahead. Keep phones, power banks, laptops ready before 05h00.
- Use backup lighting. Solar lamps or LED torches are lifesavers.
- Limit non-essential loads. Avoid heating, large appliances during outage windows.
- Report illegal connections. These often contribute to network strain. Devdiscourse+1
- Stay informed. The schedule may change. Monitor Eskom updates.
Why This Week’s Schedule Matters
- The Gauteng Load Reduction Schedule ensures grid stability during peak demand.
- Protected infrastructure supports long-term reliable supply.
- Even when national load shedding is off, localized load reduction helps prevent transformer failures. Eskom+2Our Power+2
- The rotational nature means no area is permanently left in the dark.
Key Trends & Observations
- Rotation continues. Your block may change across the week, so don’t assume “same day, same times.”
- Overlap zones. Some days list two blocks for the same time (e.g. Thursday and Monday evenings). That implies that more areas are under strain and multiple blocks may be active.
- High-density suburbs impacted. Many inner and peri-urban areas (e.g. Protea Glen, Dobsonville, Tsakane) appear frequently.
- Weekend and public holiday alert. On Saturday and Sunday, power cuts follow the same pattern — don’t assume “no schedule.”
- Policy direction. The government’s stated plan is to phase out load reduction in 12–18 months via smart meter rollout and grid upgrades.
How the Schedule Impacts Daily Life
- Households: Cooking, heating, entertainment and chores may need re-scheduling.
- Businesses: Especially small businesses in affected suburbs should plan operations outside outage windows.
- Schools & study: Students may need alternate study hours on outage days.
- Medical & essential services: Back-up power or alternate arrangements are crucial.
- Communities: Social media and neighbourhood groups often share real-time updates and mutual assistance.

The Gauteng Load Reduction Schedule for 06 to 13 October 2025 reflects the ongoing balancing act between protecting infrastructure and minimising disruption. By knowing your block and planning ahead, you can reduce the impact on your daily routine.
While the long-term goal is to retire load reduction altogether, in the meantime, your awareness and cooperation matter significantly. Stay tuned to official channels for real-time changes.
