Meanwhile, repairs are still ongoing after an underground fire in the Joburg CBD caused by suspected illegal mining activity, commonly referred to as Zama Zama operations.
The fire broke out on Saturday, 31 May 2025, in a tunnel between Fordsburg and Bree Substation, cutting power to more than 15 areas, including:

- Bree Street East & West
- Kerk Street Central & East
- De Villiers Street

“Our teams are still hard at work, exploring ways to restore supply using backfeeding options,” City Power added.

Power outages, planned or not, have a ripple effect. Here’s how you can prepare:
- Charge devices ahead of time.
- Keep your fridge and freezer closed during the outage.
- Use battery-powered lighting or candles with caution.
