Planned maintenance to impact water supply across central Johannesburg from 23 to 25 April 2025
Joburg to Face a 42-Hour Water Disruption: Here’s a List of Affected Areas
Johannesburg residents are set to endure a 42-hour planned water outage starting Wednesday, 23 April 2025 at 6pm, and ending Friday, 25 April at noon, as Johannesburg Water conducts crucial maintenance at the Hector Norris Pump Station.
The utility provider has confirmed that the extended outage is necessary for the installation of new piping infrastructure aimed at improving long-term service delivery. However, during this time, many households and businesses across central Joburg will face low water pressure or complete water cuts.
🚰 Affected Areas:
- Johannesburg CBD
- Newtown
- Selby
- Jeppestown
- Doornfontein
Residents in these suburbs are advised to prepare in advance by storing water and limiting usage during the outage.
🔧 Why the Disruption?
Johannesburg Water explained that the maintenance is essential to improve overall system reliability. While the work will cause short-term inconvenience, it is part of ongoing efforts to stabilise water supply across the metro.
The utility added that it will communicate alternative water supply points in due course and apologised for the inconvenience caused.
💧 Ongoing Restrictions Still in Place
Even outside of this planned outage, Johannesburg remains under Level 1 water restrictions, a condition that has persisted despite recent rainfall. According to Joburg Water, high consumption levels continue to place significant strain on the city’s water infrastructure.
Implemented since 8 November 2024, these restrictions include scheduled water supply reductions and intermittent pumping halts at various pump stations, all aimed at preserving reservoir levels.
📢 Johannesburg Water’s Statement:
“To manage high consumption and support the recovery of our systems, Johannesburg Water will continue to enforce the restriction programme… Reduced water pressure and supply interruptions will continue where necessary.”
Johannesburg Water also noted that while rain has helped in filling dams, sustainable water usage by residents remains critical to ensuring long-term recovery of the system.
