Chinese automaker JAC has confirmed that a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of its T9 double-cab bakkie will be arriving in South Africa in the second quarter of 2025.
Currently, the T9 is available exclusively with a 2.0-litre diesel engine. However, JAC previously indicated that a PHEV model, along with a battery-electric variant (BEV), was in the pipeline. While the PHEV’s launch date is now set, the timing for the BEV remains undisclosed.
Performance and Powertrain
The forthcoming T9 PHEV will feature a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with two electric motors—one positioned at the front and the other at the rear. The petrol engine alone produces 160kW and 370Nm of torque. The electric motors contribute an additional 60kW and 150Nm at the front and 70kW and 150Nm at the rear. Collectively, this results in a substantial total output of 290kW and 670Nm, making the T9 the most torque-heavy bakkie available in South Africa.

In terms of competition, the newly launched BYD Shark, another PHEV, delivers slightly less torque at 650Nm, making the JAC T9 a leader in its segment in terms of raw pulling power.
Battery and Charging
Powering the electric motors is a 31.2kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery that supports both AC and DC charging. Charging times stand at approximately four and a half hours using an AC plug, while a DC fast charger reduces the time to around one hour and 25 minutes. However, JAC has yet to disclose details regarding the electric-only range, combined driving range, or fuel efficiency of the PHEV model.
Off-Road Capabilities
To enhance its off-road prowess, the T9 PHEV is equipped with multi-link rigid axle rear suspension and electronic differential locks on both axles. Furthermore, it boasts a maximum towing capacity of 3,500kg, allowing it to tow horseboxes, off-road trailers, and caravans with ease.

Interior and Technology
JAC has packed the T9 PHEV with an array of advanced driver assistance features, including lane-departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning, traffic sign recognition, and a driver monitoring system.
In addition, buyers can anticipate a suite of premium features mirroring those of the diesel variant. These include keyless entry and start, leather upholstery, automatic climate control, electrically adjustable front seats, a 7-inch digital driver’s display, a wireless phone charger, a 10.4-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, parking sensors, 360-degree cameras, and a sliding sunroof.
From early images, a key distinguishing feature of the PHEV model will be a blue JAC badge on the front grille, differentiating it from the diesel variants, which feature red badging.
