Former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star Lerato Chabangu is showing remarkable progress in his road to recovery. After facing years of personal struggles that saw his life spiral downward following the abrupt end of his football career, the 39-year-old is now regaining control of his life.
A Career Cut Short and the Struggles That Followed
Chabangu, who played for some of the country’s biggest clubs and won several honours, was once a promising talent for South African football. Ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup on home soil, he was widely expected to make the final squad, but an untimely injury cost him his place in the team. The disappointment of missing out on the tournament sent him down a dark path, where alcohol became his way of coping.
Following his retirement in 2018, things worsened for Chabangu. Poor financial decisions and personal struggles led to him losing everything, including his possessions and stability. However, earlier this year, he took the courageous step of entering rehabilitation to address his battle with drug and alcohol addiction.
Entering Rehab: A New Beginning
After making the decision to enter the Hope of Achievers Rehabilitation Centre in Limpopo in February, Chabangu’s journey to recovery began. With the support of professionals, he has been progressing steadily, showing his commitment to rebuilding his life.
Since joining the rehabilitation centre, Chabangu has shown significant improvement. According to the centre’s owner, Watson Luandi, the former footballer is not only responding well to the programme but is also beginning to assist fellow patients.
Encouraging Progress in Rehab
“Lerato is progressing very well. He is responding positively to the programme and has started helping other patients,” Luandi said, as quoted by FARPost.
His engagement with professionals at the facility has been a sign of his commitment to turning his life around. Luandi also highlighted the importance of more former footballers taking charge of their lives, particularly those who have been exposed to wealth and fame.
“When athletes become addicted to drugs and alcohol, it’s crucial to rehabilitate them holistically. We don’t just focus on breaking their addiction, but also on discipline, self-control, and mental well-being,” Luandi explained.
A New Chapter for Lerato Chabangu
Chabangu’s journey serves as an inspiring reminder that recovery is possible with the right support and determination. His willingness to embrace change and help others at the rehabilitation centre suggests that he is on the right path towards reclaiming his life.
With continuous progress and guidance, Chabangu’s story could become one of redemption, offering hope to many others who find themselves in similar struggles.
