Temu and Shein Selling Hazardous Products- Everything You Need To Know

Online shopping platforms like Temu and Shein have gained massive popularity worldwide due to their affordability and vast product selections. However, recent reports from European regulators have raised serious concerns regarding the safety of some of the products sold on these platforms. Items such as children’s sleepwear, nail polish, and shoes have been found to contain hazardous substances, including carcinogens and toxins. Consumers need to be aware of these risks before making purchases.

Regulatory Warnings and Safety Concerns

The European Commission has issued warnings against Temu and Shein for selling unsafe products, holding these Chinese-based marketplaces accountable for endangering consumer safety. Concerns have also been raised in other regions, including the United States, South Korea, Malta, and South Africa.

Hazardous Products Found on Temu & Shein

Authorities have identified numerous unsafe items sold on these platforms, including:

  • Children’s Sleepwear: The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled 68,000 sets of children’s pajamas from Temu due to fire hazards.
  • Toxic Footwear: Malta’s Consumer Council banned five types of children’s shoes from Shein and Temu after detecting high levels of lead, cadmium, phthalates, and paraffin.
  • Carcinogenic Nail Polish: Tests in South Korea revealed that some nail polish sold on these platforms contained dioxane, a chemical linked to cancer and liver issues.
  • Dangerous Toys and Slime: Several children’s products, including toys and slime, have been found to contain excessive toxins, raising concerns about child safety.
  • Flammable Clothing: Some pajamas and other garments reportedly fail to meet safety standards, increasing the risk of fire hazards.
  • Faulty Heaters and Electronics: The British Consumer Council reported heating devices with severe electrical irregularities that could pose a risk of fire and electrical shocks.

High Levels of Carcinogens Detected

Among the most alarming findings are the dangerously high levels of toxic chemicals in certain children’s clothing and shoes. South Korean authorities found that seven out of 26 winter clothing items for kids contained excessive toxins. One jacket had phthalates 622 times above the legal limit, while a sweatshirt was 294 times over the allowable threshold.

The International Cancer Institute classifies phthalates as carcinogenic, meaning prolonged exposure could increase the risk of cancer. Additionally, Shein’s underwear was found to contain three times the allowable levels of substances linked to bladder cancer.

South African Authorities Raise Concerns Over Unregulated Electronics

In South Africa, MyBroadband conducted an investigation that found Temu selling electronics without the necessary regulatory approvals. Products with radio transmitters (Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) were found to lack certification from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa).

Additionally, some electrical devices did not have clearance from the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS). This means that:

  • Devices may not meet local safety standards, increasing the risk of malfunctions and electrical hazards.
  • Unapproved radio frequency devices may interfere with South Africa’s wireless networks, disrupting communication and internet connectivity.
  • South African consumers could be at risk of purchasing faulty or dangerous products without knowing.

Are These Platforms Taking Action?

Both Temu and Shein have responded to the safety concerns, claiming to implement stricter quality controls:

  • Shein stated it would invest $15 million (R276 million) in product safety testing in 2025. It also reported cutting ties with over 260 suppliers that failed to meet safety regulations.
  • Temu emphasized that it collaborates with global safety certification companies such as TÜV SÜD, SGS, and Bureau Veritas Group to ensure product compliance.

Despite these assurances, regulators remain skeptical, urging consumers to exercise caution when shopping on these platforms.

What Can Consumers Do to Stay Safe?

If you frequently shop on Temu and Shein, here are some safety tips to consider:

✅ Check Product Reviews – Look for detailed feedback from other buyers regarding quality and safety concerns.
✅ Verify Certifications – Ensure that electronics have Icasa and NRCS approval before purchasing.
✅ Avoid High-Risk Products – Be cautious when buying children’s clothing, beauty products, and toys that may contain harmful chemicals.
✅ Read Labels Carefully – If possible, research the ingredients in beauty products and materials used in clothing and footwear.
✅ Report Unsafe Products – If you suspect an item is unsafe, report it to consumer protection authorities in your country.

While Temu and Shein offer budget-friendly options for online shoppers, recent reports highlight serious safety concerns regarding toxic chemicals, hazardous electronics, and unsafe children’s products. Regulators worldwide have raised red flags, and consumers should remain vigilant when purchasing from these platforms.

Your safety should always come first—shop smart and stay informed
