Breakdown of NSFAS Allowances for 2025

The NSFAS allowance structure differs based on whether a student is attending a university or a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college. Below is a comprehensive overview of the different allowances:

1. University Students

University students receive different types of financial aid, depending on their study location and needs.

  • Accommodation Allowance: NSFAS covers the actual cost of accommodation, provided it does not exceed the university residence cost.
  • Transport Allowance: Students living within a 40 km radius of their institution receive up to R7,500 per year.
  • Living Allowance: Each student gets R15,000 per year to help with daily expenses such as food and toiletries.
  • Book Allowance: Students receive R5,200 per year for purchasing textbooks and other learning materials.
  • Incidental/Personal Care Allowance: Students in catered residences get an additional R2,900 per year for personal needs.

2. TVET College Students

Students attending TVET colleges also receive different allowances based on their location and needs.

  • Accommodation Allowance:
    • Urban areas: R24,000 per year
    • Peri-urban areas: R18,900 per year
    • Rural areas: R15,750 per year
  • Transport Allowance: Students living within a 40 km radius receive up to R7,350 per year.
  • Living Allowance: Each student gets R7,000 per year to cover basic living expenses.
  • Incidental/Personal Care Allowance: A personal care allowance of R2,900 per year is allocated to students.

Additional NSFAS Support in 2025

Apart from the standard allowances, NSFAS also provides additional funding for students with special needs.

  • Disability Allowance: Students with disabilities receive extra financial support for assistive devices and personal assistance. The amount varies based on individual needs.
  • Laptop and Learning Device Support: Students can use their R5,200 book allowance to purchase laptops or other essential digital learning tools.

Eligibility Criteria for NSFAS in 2025

To qualify for NSFAS funding in 2025, students must meet the following requirements:

  • South African citizenship or permanent residency status.
  • A household income of R350,000 or less per year.
  • Students with disabilities qualify if their household income is not more than R600,000 per year.
  • SASSA grant recipients automatically qualify for NSFAS funding.
  • Must be accepted into a public university or TVET college.
  • Must have an active email account and valid cellphone number for communication.

Factors That May Influence the NSFAS Allowance for 2025

Several factors determine the NSFAS allowance structure and potential adjustments:

  1. Inflation and Cost of Living – Rising living costs may result in increases in allowances.
  2. Government Budget Allocation – The amount of funding NSFAS receives from the government impacts the allowances distributed.
  3. Policy Changes – The government may introduce new policies that adjust NSFAS eligibility and allowances.

How to Apply for NSFAS Funding

Applying for NSFAS funding is a straightforward process. Follow these steps to apply:

  1. Create a MyNSFAS Account
    • Visit the NSFAS website: www.nsfas.org.za
    • Register an account using your ID number and email address.
  2. Complete the Application Form
    • Log in to your account and fill in the required details.
  3. Submit Supporting Documents
    • Upload necessary documents such as proof of income and academic records.
  4. Submit the Application
    • Double-check all details before submission.
  5. Track Your Application
    • You can monitor your application status through your MyNSFAS account.

What Happens After You Apply?

Once you submit your application, NSFAS will review it and notify you if your funding is approved. If successful, your allowances will be disbursed based on the payment schedule set by NSFAS and your institution.
