In Gauteng, today’s weather will be pleasant, with daytime highs reaching 29°C in Pretoria and 28°C in Johannesburg. Both cities will experience mild mornings with lows of 17°C and 16°C, respectively. The conditions are ideal for outdoor activities, but it’s always wise to carry sunscreen and stay hydrated as temperatures rise during the afternoon.

Cape Town and Surrounding Areas

Cape Town residents can look forward to a warm day with a high of 30°C and a cool morning low of 17°C. With a gentle breeze coming in from the Atlantic Ocean, today’s weather provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy outdoor pursuits. However, caution is advised for beachgoers, as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning about high UV levels.

Durban and Coastal KwaZulu-Natal

In Durban, today’s weather features a high of 26°C, accompanied by humid conditions and a low of 22°C. Coastal winds will provide some relief from the humidity, but scattered clouds are expected throughout the day. Residents are advised to keep an umbrella handy in case of unexpected light rain.

Bloemfontein

Bloemfontein will experience the hottest weather today, with a scorching high of 34°C. Early morning temperatures will hover around 18°C, giving a brief respite before the heat intensifies. Ensure you stay in shaded areas and drink plenty of water to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Upington

Upington will see the highest temperatures in the country, with today’s weather reaching a sweltering 39°C. The morning low of 20°C will quickly give way to intense heat. Residents should avoid prolonged outdoor activities and ensure pets and plants are adequately protected from the heat.

Polokwane

Polokwane’s weather today is more moderate, with a pleasant high of 29°C and a low of 17°C. With mostly sunny skies, this is an ideal day for enjoying outdoor events or family picnics.

Port Elizabeth and East London

Port Elizabeth starts off cooler, with a high of 23°C, while East London will experience 22°C during the day. Both cities will warm up in the evening with lows of 19°C. Coastal winds are expected to pick up in the afternoon, so residents should secure outdoor furniture and be cautious while driving near the coast.

Key Warnings and Safety Tips

While today’s weather brings generally favorable conditions, there are some critical warnings to note:

  1. Heat Warnings: Upington and Bloemfontein will experience extreme heat, with temperatures reaching 39°C and 34°C, respectively. Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak hours (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and wear light, breathable clothing.
  2. UV Index Alert: Cape Town and other sunny regions are expected to have high UV levels. Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and wear protective clothing to avoid sunburn.
  3. Wind Advisory: Coastal areas like Port Elizabeth and East London may experience strong winds. Secure loose objects and be cautious while driving, especially near the coast.
  4. Hydration: With temperatures rising, it’s essential to stay hydrated. Carry a water bottle and sip throughout the day, even if you’re not thirsty.

Tips to Make the Most of Today’s Weather

  1. Plan Outdoor Activities Early: For cities like Pretoria, Polokwane, and Johannesburg, enjoy outdoor activities early in the day to avoid the peak heat.
  2. Beach Preparations: If you’re in Cape Town or Durban, pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat.
  3. Stay Informed: Follow updates from the SAWS for any sudden changes in today’s weather.

Today’s weather, 21 January 2025, offers a variety of conditions across South Africa. While some regions enjoy moderate temperatures, others will face extreme heat or strong winds. By staying prepared and heeding safety warnings, you can make the most of the day. Remember to check local updates and take necessary precautions based on your city’s forecast.

Stay safe and enjoy the day!
