Chery Unveils New Bakkie Model Set to Launch in South Africa
SHARE

Chery, one of China’s rapidly growing automotive brands, has set its sights on the South African bakkie market with the unveiling of its latest concept double-cab, codenamed KP11. The new model is expected to rival other popular bakkies in the country and is part of the brand’s broader global expansion strategy. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect from Chery’s latest bakkie offering.

A Competitive Entry in the Bakkie Segment

In a bid to challenge Chinese competitors like GWM, LDV, Foton, and JAC, Chery showcased the KP11 bakkie concept at its annual summit in Wuhu, China. The bakkie, built on a ladder-frame chassis, is designed to offer versatility across urban and off-road environments. Production is set to begin in mid-2025, with the model expected to arrive in South Africa by late 2025 or early 2026.

Two Versions: Urban and Off-Road

Chery’s KP11 concept will be available in two main configurations. The “Urban” version is designed for everyday use, making it more suitable for city drivers and those in need of a workhorse. On the other hand, the off-road variant takes heavy inspiration from the popular Ford Ranger Raptor. It was showcased with rugged BF Goodrich tires and equipped with a variety of overlanding accessories, suggesting it will be a strong contender in the adventure and off-roading space.

Powertrain Options and Advanced Propulsion

Although Chery has yet to release detailed information about the KP11’s engine options, there are strong indications that a 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine could be among the available powertrains. Additionally, Chery has hinted at offering plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and range-extended electric vehicle (EV) options, though these may only be available in select markets. The inclusion of such advanced propulsion systems demonstrates Chery’s commitment to innovation and aligns with global trends toward greener vehicle technologies.

Competitive Pricing and Market Positioning

Chery aims to price the KP11 competitively, with initial indications pointing towards pricing on par with the GWM P Series. However, with production and landing costs still to be finalized, Chery has not confirmed the exact pricing. The final cost and specifications will be announced closer to the bakkie’s official launch in South Africa. If the brand manages to balance affordability with premium features, the KP11 could become a popular choice for South African bakkie buyers.

Design and Features: A Nod to Popular Bakkie Models

In terms of design, the off-road version of the KP11 has drawn inspiration from top-tier models such as the Ford Ranger Raptor. It features a distinctive rear side step integrated into the bumper, a practical feature that enhances ease of access. The model was also shown with a variety of aftermarket accessories, including camping and overlanding gear, highlighting its potential for customization. While the final name and design may change, the showcased concept gives a clear indication of the rugged and feature-rich direction Chery is taking with this model.

South Africa: A Key Market for the KP11

South Africa remains a crucial market for bakkies, and Chery is clearly aiming to capture a share of this segment with the KP11. With its mix of urban functionality and off-road capability, the bakkie is well-positioned to appeal to a broad spectrum of customers, from city drivers to adventure enthusiasts. If Chery can deliver on its promises of versatility, advanced powertrain options, and competitive pricing, the KP11 could be a game-changer in the local market.

Chery’s KP11 bakkie is poised to make waves in the South African market when it launches in late 2025 or early 2026. With a strong focus on versatility, advanced propulsion technologies, and competitive pricing, the KP11 will offer consumers an exciting new option in the bakkie segment. As more details emerge, it’s clear that Chery is committed to delivering a robust and attractive vehicle that can meet the diverse needs of the South African market.
