Severe Storms in Mpumalanga & KZN, Heatwave Scorches Gauteng and Limpopo

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a weather warning for Wednesday, 4 December 2024, alerting residents across several provinces to severe weather conditions. Severe storms are expected to affect Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), while a heatwave is scorching Gauteng, Limpopo, and parts of the North West. Here’s what you need to know about the latest weather forecast.

Severe Thunderstorms and Hail in Mpumalanga and KZN

SAWS has issued a yellow-level 2 warning for severe storms expected to affect Mpumalanga, particularly the southern escarpment, and most parts of KZN. These severe storms could cause localised damage to infrastructure, vehicles, and property. The combination of heavy downpours, hail, damaging winds, and excessive lightning poses risks to both livelihoods and livestock.

Residents in these areas should remain vigilant, as hailstorms can cause significant damage, and flooding is also a concern due to the heavy rainfall expected. The thunderstorms will likely begin in the afternoon and continue through the evening, making it crucial for people to stay informed about the changing weather conditions.

Heatwave Warnings Across Multiple Provinces

In contrast to the storms in the east, a heatwave is affecting Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West, and parts of KwaZulu-Natal. Extreme temperatures are expected, particularly in the Lowveld areas of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, where the heat will be unbearable. The heatwave is predicted to last until at least Friday, with temperatures soaring well above normal levels.

SAWS advises residents of these areas to take precautions, especially during the hottest parts of the day. Prolonged sun exposure can lead to dehydration, heatstroke, and sunburn. The sunburn index for Gauteng and the Western Cape is considered “extreme,” and precautions should be taken to protect your skin from UV rays.

Provincial Forecast for 4 December 2024

Here’s a breakdown of the expected weather conditions across various provinces:

  • Gauteng: Hot and partly cloudy conditions are expected. The north will experience very hot temperatures, and afternoon thunderstorms are anticipated. The UV index is “very high,” so take precautions if you’re going outdoors.
  • Mpumalanga: Expect fine and hot weather, becoming extremely hot in the Lowveld. Isolated thunderstorms are likely in the afternoon, especially along the escarpment.
  • Limpopo: Partly cloudy and extremely hot, particularly in the Lowveld and Limpopo Valley. Isolated thunderstorms will occur, except in the central northern parts of the province.
  • North West: Fine, windy, and hot conditions will prevail, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected in the east.
  • Free State: Fine, warm, and windy weather with partly cloudy conditions in the afternoon. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected in the extreme eastern part of the province.
  • Northern Cape: Mild and cool along the coastline, while fine and hot weather will dominate inland areas. There may be isolated thunderstorms in the extreme north-central regions.
  • Western Cape: Partly cloudy conditions are expected in the southwest and extreme east. Otherwise, it will be fine and warm, but with an extreme UV index—take extra care when out in the sun.
  • Eastern Cape: Morning fog will give way to partly cloudy and warm conditions. Thunderstorms are expected in the northeast, with isolated showers and rain scattered in the southeast.
  • KwaZulu-Natal: Morning fog will clear, leaving partly cloudy to cloudy skies. Scattered showers and thundershowers are expected, but the extreme southeast should remain dry.

Safety Tips for Severe Weather Conditions

  1. Heatwave Precautions:
    • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
    • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
    • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and sunscreen.
    • Seek shade whenever possible.
  2. Thunderstorm Safety:
    • Stay indoors during severe thunderstorms and avoid driving through flooded areas.
    • Secure any outdoor objects that could become airborne in strong winds.
    • Keep electronics unplugged to avoid lightning damage.
  3. Fire Danger:
    • Due to high fire risk in parts of the Northern Cape, Free State, North West, and Gauteng, avoid lighting open fires and ensure all campfires or cooking flames are fully extinguished.

The weather in South Africa on 4 December 2024 presents a stark contrast between severe thunderstorms in Mpumalanga and KZN and the scorching heatwave affecting Gauteng, Limpopo, and parts of the North West. The SA Weather Service urges residents to stay informed and take appropriate measures to protect themselves from the extreme weather conditions.

Whether you’re braving the heat or preparing for storms, staying safe and prepared will help you navigate the unpredictable weather in the coming days.
