Glendower Golf Club is ranked among the top ten golf courses in South Africa and remains one of the country’s most respected championship layouts. Established in 1935, the club has built a strong reputation for excellence, offering golfers a first-class experience in a tranquil, beautifully maintained setting.
Glendower Golf Club: A Proud History
Glendower hosted its first major event, the Transvaal Open Championship, in 1939 and has since staged many of South Africa’s flagship tournaments. Over the decades, it has become a favourite venue for professionals and amateurs, with several South African Open Championships held here in recent years.
A Championship Course With Character
The course underwent major upgrades during the 1980s, which reshaped the greens, introduced new tee boxes, and added water features and hazards. These changes enhanced both the difficulty and beauty of the layout. Today, Glendower is known for its precision-focused design. Water hazards feature on 11 of the 18 holes, and the course includes 64 bunkers, with 27 on the front nine and 37 on the back nine. The kikuyu fairways and quick greens offer a true championship test.
A Nature Reserve Setting
In 1973, the Golf Club was proclaimed a nature reserve to protect the rich birdlife that surrounds the course. This unique status provides golfers with a serene environment filled with natural beauty, making a round at Glendower as scenic as it is challenging.
