The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2023) is not just about national pride and continental glory – it is also about significant financial rewards. With a 40% increase in prize money compared to the previous edition, players and teams have even more motivation to chase victory. Here is a breakdown of what is at stake, and what South Africa stands to gain.

AFCON 2023 Prize Money: What is On The Line?

Winners Take All:

The ultimate goal comes with a hefty payday. The champion of AFCON 2024 will pocket a whopping R120.4 million Rand (ZAR), a significant increase from the R86 million awarded in 2021. This translates to approximately €5.9 million or US$6.34 million, a substantial sum for both individual players and national football associations.

Beyond the Top Spot:

Even without lifting the trophy, teams can still earn significant sums based on their performance. Here is the prize money breakdown in Rands:

  • Runners-up: R68.8 million
  • Semi-finalists: R43 million each
  • Quarter-finalists: R22.7 million each
  • Round of 16: R14 million each
  • Third-place finishers in groups: R12.3 million each
  • Fourth-place finishers in groups: R8.6 million each

Individual Player Earnings:

While CAF does not disclose individual player salaries, the prize money is typically distributed among the squad according to pre-agreed terms between players and their national associations. Additionally, players might receive bonuses from their clubs or individual sponsors based on their performance in the tournament.

Impact of Increased Prize Money:

The significant increase in prize money is intended to boost the professionalisation of African football and attract higher-caliber players to participate in the AFCON. Additionally, it can serve as a financial boost for national associations, allowing them to invest in infrastructure, development programs, and player compensation.

Here is a table summarising their potential AFCON 2023 earnings:

PerformancePrize Money (USD)Prize Money (Euro)Prize Money (ZAR)
Semi-finalists$2,270,000€2,110,000R43,000,000
Runners-up$3,640,000€3,380,000R68,800,000
Champions$6,360,000€5,910,000R120,400,000
AFCON 2023 Prize Money- Please note that these amounts are subject to the exchange rate on 7 February 2024.

If the South African team manages to win their upcoming semi-final match, they will secure themselves a minimum of R43 million. This guaranteed prize money comes from reaching the semi-final stage. However, their potential earnings depend on their final placement:

Possible Scenarios:

  • Finishing As Runners-Up: If they fall short in the final after winning the semi-final, they will get R68.8 million for being the second-best team.
  • Lifting the Trophy: If they manage to conquer the final battle and become the AFCON 2024 champions, the ultimate prize of R120.4 million awaits them.

In simpler terms:

  • Minimum Potential Earnings: R43 million (for reaching the semi-finals)
  • Maximum Potential Earnings: R120.4 million (for winning the tournament)

Remember, these are just potential earnings based on their current performance. Their final payout will depend on their actual results in the remaining matches. Nonetheless, the entire country will be behind them, hoping they bring home not only the prestigious trophy but also a significant financial reward!

Beyond Monetary Rewards:

While the financial rewards are attractive, the true value of participating in the AFCON lies in the opportunity to represent one’s nation on the biggest stage in African football. The chance to lift the trophy and earn bragging rights against continental rivals is an immeasurable motivator for both players and fans.

So, as the AFCON 2024 unfolds, remember that while the financial stakes are high, the pursuit of glory, national pride, and individual brilliance will ultimately drive the players and teams toward victory. Now, let us all cheer on the South African team as they strive for their share of the prize money and, more importantly, continental glory!
