The incident happened with Amakhosi leading and on course to extend their advantage to 2–0, but the offside call changed the game’s momentum.
The decision visibly frustrated Mmodi, who questioned why Mayo had touched the ball just before it crossed the goal line. The error proved costly as AmaZulu fought back to equalise, forcing Chiefs to settle for a disappointing draw and drop two valuable league points.
Mayo Opens Up About the Incident
Speaking after the match, Mayo admitted his mistake and revealed that he and Mmodi cleared the air at halftime.
“During the game, at half-time, we spoke about it. I apologised, and he told me these things happen it’s football. It was just a lapse of concentration; I wasn’t aware of my surroundings. We moved on from it,” Mayo explained.
He added that they even discussed the matter again later that evening. “After the game, I gave him a call, and he said, ‘Don’t worry, these things happen, it’s done. Let’s focus on what’s next.’”
Mmodi Shows Leadership and Understanding
Mmodi also commented on the situation, choosing to show support rather than frustration toward his teammate.
“As he said, this is football. I’ve known Mayo for a long time he’s a striker who loves scoring goals,” said Mmodi. “I never took it personally or asked why he did that. Everyone makes mistakes; nobody is perfect. Life goes on because the next day, I’ll need him again.”

After the dramatic draw, Kaizer Chiefs are turning their attention to their next Betway Premiership fixture against Siwelele at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening. Both Mayo and Mmodi will be eager to put the offside controversy behind them as Amakhosi aim to get back to winning ways.
